5 Certification Program Terminology
Definition Certification policy A policy of the Windows Certification Program Certification requirement A requirement for your product If implemented A certification requirement that applies if a specific technology is implemented Device Families A device product family is a set of devices that expose the same functionality or a subset of functionality and would interoperate with Windows in exactly the same manner. Feature Windows capability that is exposed or enhanced by a device or a kernel-mode driver Product Type Collection of features that are associated with a particular device, filter, or system in common use with Windows.

6 Certification Program Policies and Processes
The business policies establish the framework as partners prepare products for Windows 8 systems and devices. Policies are available at:

7 Submission Types Reseller DUA Driver Maintenance
For a peripheral device (connected device) whose primary function is outside the interaction with the PC and whose functionality is evaluated by the Windows HCK, changes that do not affect the interaction between the device and the PC or affect the applicable requirements are not considered grounds for a resubmission. DUA For an already approved driver submission, changes to driver packages that add, remove, or modify files that do not interoperate with or otherwise affect driver functionality or reliability are allowed via a DUA submission. Driver Maintenance No PnP IDs can be added to the INF file. The driver cannot be used with new products. Do not add new product names to the catalog. The Reseller Submission Policy allows companies that purchase a certified product from a manufacturer to resell as their own and receive a listing in the Microsoft catalogs and Hardware Compatibility List. Resellers repackage and relabel the purchased device or system with the right to display the logo. Reseller submissions do not require retesting and have a reduced processing fee. A reseller submission retains a dependency on the parent submission. If the parent submission fails an audit, the reseller submission also fails. Products that are submitted as a reseller submission have the following restrictions: The reselling company cannot change the hardware or software when relabeling or repackaging the product, except for branding or splash-screen changes to identify the product under the new company name. The distribution rights for the original driver remain with the original submitter. If a reseller wants to control distribution for its product, take the following steps: Revise the PnP ID of the product to include the subvendor ID. Submit a Driver Update Submission that revises the information (INF) file to reflect the new PnP ID. If a reseller wants to change the driver binary for a device, a new initial device submission must be made (with full testing). All reseller submissions are subject to audit. For a peripheral device (connected device) whose primary function is outside the interaction with the PC and whose functionality is evaluated by the Windows HCK, changes that do not affect the interaction between the device and the PC or affect the applicable requirements are not considered grounds for a resubmission.
