City-states were ran by the merchants Phoenicians were famous for their purple dye Extracted from the murex shellfish. Stained the workers’ hands, hence the nickname, the “Purple People.”

7 Carthage Carthage was a Phoenician colony, or permanent settlement.
Carthage became powerful because of its location in the Mediterranean Sea. It was a convenient place to stop for travelers

8 Gods and Goddesses Priests performed sacrifices of wine, perfume, animals, and humans to please the gods. They embalmed their dead and placed them in hillside cemeteries.
