1 NAS Vendors NAS Vendors Introduction
This lesson provides a brief overview of the major players in the NAS market. This overview covers overall market shares of major vendors, and discusses, Network Appliance and EMC, the two with the largest market share. It also coves a variety of vendors with a considerably smaller market share than the first two, and Microsoft's SAK. Importance Although Cisco is continuing to focus on the SAN market, Systems Engineers (SEs) need to be aware of the major vendors in the NAS market, in the event that a client’s needs will be better met by a Network Attached Solution (NAS) solution. © 2003, Cisco Systems, Inc. 2 Lesson Objective Upon completion of this lesson, you will identify key NAS vendors, their market position, and provide an overview of their NAS product offerings. Performance Objective Upon completion of this lesson, you will identify key NAS vendors, their market position, and provide an overview of their NAS product offerings. Enabling Objectives Identify the market share of major NAS vendors Explain Network Appliance's market position and offerings. Identify EMC's market position and basic offerings. Identify other vendors in the NAS market with a smaller market share than NetApp or EMC. Explain why Microsoft is important in the NAS market

3 Lesson Outline NAS market share by revenue Network Appliance EMC
Other NAS vendors Microsoft Summary Prerequisites Curriculum Unit 1, all Module 1 lessons and Module 2 lesson "File Sharing for NAS and SAN", and the Module 3 lessons, "NAS Building Blocks", "NAS Application Environments" and "NAS Protocols."

4 NAS Market Share by Revenue
Snap (Quantum) 2% Other 3% HPQ 3% Dell 3% IBM 4% NetApp 46% Network Appliance Objective Identify the market share of the major NAS vendors. Introduction This section introduces the market share of the major NAS vendors. Facts As the revenue chart illustrates, the two predominant leaders in NAS are Network Appliance and EMC. These numbers are tentative. Vendors are constantly claiming higher numbers. The chart is intended to provide a general idea of the market share of the key players in the NAS market. 5 Network Appliance FAS900, F800 and F87 series filers
Scaling to over 48TB Data ONTAP operating system Write Anywhere File Layout (WAFL) NearStore disk backup systems Support for SMP, NDMP, RAID, NAS clustering, snapshots, etc.. Network Appliance Objective Explain Network Appliance's market position and offerings. Introduction This section introduces the top NAS vendor, Network Appliance (NetApp). Facts Network appliance is currently the leading NAS vendor. Their key products are the FAS900, F800 and F87 series filers. At the high end end they scale to over 48TB. The heart of the NetApp filer is the Data ONTAP, a highly optimized and scaleable operating system which supports multiple protocols, access control, integrated RAID, symmetric multiprocessing, and NDMP. The tightly integrated WAFL file system provides dynamically expandable file storage. NetApp recently introduced a new product line called "NearStore" which uses inexpensive IDE drives, instead of SCSI. NetApp customers include large engineering companies and silicon technology developers. Large web content deliverers deploy NetApp filers because of their enterprise-level shared storage for server farms. Intel, Yahoo and AOL are large NetApp customers. Continued …

6 EMC Celerra product line CLARiiON product line EMC’s primary NAS line
Includes NAS Head solutions HighRoad file system Support for NAS clusters CLARiiON product line Both SAN and NAS solutions EMC Objective Identify EMC's market position and basic offerings. Introduction This section introduces EMC's two product lines. Facts EMC is another leading NAS vendor, second only to Network Appliance. They sell two product lines that include NAS devices. Their primary NAS line is the EMC Celerra series which includes NAS filers and a NAS Head that will front end their Symmetrix or CLARiiON SAN subsystems for customers who want to integrate file interfaces directly. The EMC CLARiiON series are mostly SAN subsystems, but also includes NAS devices. Both series include high-performance file servers that are easy to install, configure and maintain. They are scalable NAS products that enable Windows and UNIX clients to share information transparently over IP networks in mission-critical environments. Since EMC is also a leader in disk subsystems, they have been able to sell a lot of NAS devices into their enterprise accounts.

7 Other NAS Vendors IBM—TotalStorage Dell—PowerVault
HPQ—StorageWorks and SureStore Snap Appliance—Server/Guardian Auspex—NSC3000 series Other NAS Vendors Objective Identify other vendors in the NAS market with a smaller market share than NetApp or EMC. Introduction This section introduces vendors in the NAS marketplace, who although they have a smaller share, are still important. Facts The IBM TotalStorage series includes NAS and NAS Head devices Dell offers the PowerVault series of NAS and NAS Head devices which, at the high end, includes an offering from the EMC CLARiiON product line. The HP/Compaq (HPQ) StorageWorks series includes NAS and NAS Head devices. Snap Appliance (spun off from Quantum) was the 1st mass-market low end NAS provider. It is believed they have lost money since their inception. Some feel that the low end NAS business model is not viable. Their Linux-based Guardian™ Operating System and enterprise-level Guardian servers offer cross-platform file sharing. Auspex was the first NAS company (several engineers left Auspex to form NetApp). Some feel Auspex failed in the NAS market because they did not innovate with data management and did not have their own file system, which is considered a shortcoming in the NAS market. Practice List vendors other than NetAPP or EMC and their product offerings.

8 Microsoft MS Server Appliance Kit (SAK)
Basis for Windows based NAS servers Large shift away from Open source operating systems to Windows HPQ, IBM, Hitachi, Dell and others use SAK Microsoft Objective - Explain why Microsoft is important in the NAS market. Introduction - This section introduces the learner to Microsoft's importance in the NAS market, which is due to Microsoft's Server Appliance Kit (SAK). Facts Microsoft is an important NAS player because of their SAK software, which is used by several major systems manufacturers such as IBM, Dell and HPQ to make NAS appliances. IBM: TotalStorage line. NAS200G, NAS300G. Gateway product with iSCSI, Ethernet front end and fibre channel back end for NAS/SAN convergence. Features 2 node clustering. Like many, IBM is moving toward ATA technology for NAS. Dell: The "PowerVault"  NAS products. Connect directly to existing LAN, support multiple operating system clients or servers, and provide multi-platform file sharing. HPQ: Focus on NAS performance combining HP NAS Server with TCP/IP Accelerator Cards. Hitachi: Hitachi partners with Network Storage Solutions (NSS). 1U NASengine, 2 U microStor-II. 6U SPANStor NAS servers attach to Freedom Data Networks line of storage.
