2 Label the goal of a label is to communicate information efficiently; that is, to convey meaning without taking up too much of a page's vertical space or a user's cognitive space. 6/27/2018

3 1.Why is important labeling system in internet context?
Labeling is a form of representation. Just as we use spoken words to represent concepts and thoughts, we use labels to represent chunks information in our web sites. For example, <contacts> in the library site contain information about s addresses. The user can then decide whether to click to get more contact information 6/27/2018

4 1.Why is important labeling system in internet context? (2)
So the goal of a label is to communicate information. Anyone developing content or an architecture for a web site is creating labels 6/27/2018

5 1.Why is important labeling system in internet context? (3)
Labels describe the hypertext links within the body of a document Labels should educate users about new concepts and help them quickly identify familiar ones. Labels represent information in your site says a lot about you, your organization. 6/27/2018

6 1.Why is important labeling system in internet context? (4)
In web site's labeling poor, unprofessional labeling can destroy a user's confidence. Like writing or any other form of professional communication, labels do matter. They're as integral to an effective web presence as any other aspect of your web site. Labels are often used as hidings that describe the chunk of information that follows. 6/27/2018

7 2. 2.Variety of kinds of labeling (1)
On the Web, we regularly encounter labels in two formats: Textual Iconic 6/27/2018

8 Textual labels Contextual links - Hyperlinks to chunks of information on other pages or to another location on the same page Headings - Labels that simply describe the content that follows them, just as print headings do Navigation system choices - Labels representing the options in navigation systems Index terms - Keywords, tags, and subject headings that represent content for searching or browsing 6/27/2018

9 Iconic Labels Icons can represent information in much the same way as text can. We see them. That's why they're more typically used for navigation system or small organization system labels, where the list of options is small, than for larger sets of labels such as index terms, where iconic "vocabularies" are quickly outstripped. 6/27/2018

10 4.Examples of problems of labeling:
Many pages don't have main headings. Don’t determine beforehand what the audiences' needs are most likely to be. Don’t learn how your users would use information by card sorting methodologies. Too many of page labels don't represent the content they link . Contextual links are generally not developed systematically. 6/27/2018

11 5. List of rules about labeling systems
Perhaps it is the most difficult aspect of information. You absolutely cannot assume that the label "main page" will be correctly interpreted by 100 percent of your site's users. Users, and context affect all aspects of an information architecture, and this is particularly true with labels. So what can we do to make sure our labels are less ambiguous and more representational? 6/27/2018

12 Designing effective labels
Summarize any actions required of your audience Summarize any follow up action items required of you We shall notes that labeling is easier if the site's content, users, and context are kept simple and focused. Many sites try to have too many members. In successful labeling systems, one characteristic is typically consistency, Consistency is important, because consistency means predictability, and systems that are predictable and are simply easier to learn. The following guidelines are important for consistency. 6/27/2018

13 Consistency is affected by many issues: such as:
1.Style: 2. Presentation: Consistent application of fonts, font sizes, colors, white space, ungrouping can help visually reinforce the systematic nature of a group of labels . 6/27/2018

14 3.Syntax: Within a syntactical specific labeling system, consider choosing a single approach and sticking with it. 4. Granularity: Within a labeling system, it can be helpful to present labels such as site indexes. 5. Comprehensiveness: Aside from improving consistency, a comprehensive scope also helps users do a better job of quickly scanning. 6/27/2018
