Gumboot dance
2
Origin
3
ORIGIN Gumboot dancing was conceived by miners in South Africa.
4
ORIGIN The boots were a solution to a problem of often flooded gold mines in which men otherwise stood in knee-deep water toiling at their work stations
5
ORIGIN Workers were often not allowed to communicate with one another, which led to them developing a form of communication by slapping their gumboots and their bare chests and ringing their shackles.
6
ORIGIN From there it spread tribally and became popular throughout South Africa, and eventually became a popular performance art worldwide.
