1 Dr Andreas Walmsley, October 2017
Designing a Research-Based Curriculum Embedding your research into your teaching: An example of how it could work. Dr Andreas Walmsley, October 2017

2 The Context ENT207 Contemporary Issues in Entrepreneurship Research
Final stage of a two-year fast-track programme: BSc Business Enterprise and Entrepreneuship

3 Secondary data This session focussed on the use of secondary data
I drew on an example of a project where I had used data from the International Labour Office’s LABORSTA database

4 Secondary data Using a real life scenario I was able to draw attention to some of the pitfalls in relying on secondary data, as well as its advantages…

5 Combining Primary and Secondary Data
Here I drew on an example of a study where initially we’d collected data from websites and internal documentation, before then going to interview managers and staff. - again, I was able to provide examples of some of the challenges associated with this…

6 Survey Design and construct measurement
Using an example from a paper I co- authored on entrepreneurship education in the first year of higher education Aim: to aid understanding of the importance of question wording, and to avoid one-item measures of key constructs

7 Conducting Interviews
Here I drew on my experience of collecting data for my PhD where I had to learn to deal with a range of participants (some less responsive than others).

8 So What did I learn? On reflection:
- I felt good about being able to discuss my own research – I felt at least it added to my credibility - I felt being able to illustrate one’s own mistakes took some of the fear out of research for the students (I imagine they felt research was this big academic ‘thing’ that only academics do, and when they do it they don’t make mistakes) - It provided a useful discussion point, it made me more relaxed, because it embedded a learning outcome in a story (each example involved telling the story behind that particular piece of research) - Although the theme of the module is geared towards research, there are general principles behind the examples that could be applied to a range of modules, e.g. dealing with people in HRM, or the dangers of using inappropriate forms of measurement in Accounting and Finance, or issues around corporate (mis)governance in a module on Sustainable Enterprise.
