2 Computer Safety Offline and Online
Disposal of old hard drives and flash drives. Drill holes and use encryption for flash drives. Protect user names and passwords Maintain a backup schedule. Know you the source of your peripherals. Use programs like Eraser to permanently remove files you “think” you deleted. Hide your personal Files

3 Online Never enter passwords or personal information from links ed to you from an unknown source Use a password manager. Encrypt your files using an app such as Encrypto. Encrypt your s. Have your firewall on. Encrypt your chats. Do not click on pop ups or adds Understand that anything you put online stays online forever. Watch for false news. Check before downloading. Many downloads contain a virus. Verify a site before purchasing anything.

4 Social Networking Dos and Don’ts
Monitor your kids use. Watch what you post. (Anything you post or say will be there forever even if you remove it.) Make sure you understand and set privacy settings. Be selective on who you friend. Quality over quantity. Watch who you are sharing with. Carful not to share with all if you only want one person to view it. Employers will look for your profiles. Proofread your posts. Be selective on what you share.

5 Don’ts Talk about leaving the house or going on vacation.
Tell anyone where you live. Don’t use inappropriate language. Don’t bully. Cyber bulling is illegal. Never sent a picture of yourself to a stranger Never enter a chatroom without checking into it. Don’t pretend to be someone else, real or imaginary. Don’t believe everything you read. Watch for false news.

6 Ethical Use of Internet Materials
Do not pass as your own creation. Look for royalty free sources. Us for non-profit purposes If one license is purchased do not make copies. Do not alter materials.

7 Copyright Guidelines Check to see if it is copyrighted if not sure don’t use it. Follow Fair Use Text: Up to 1000 words, but not more that 10% of the book or article Poems: Up to 250 words or the entire poem if less than 250 words, No more than 3 poems by the same author. Photographs or Drawings: Up to 5 by the same person, No more than15 images from a collection, images cannot be changed. Videos: Up to 3 minutes but no more than 10% of the entire video. Cannot be changed Music: Up to 30 seconds but not more than 10% of sheet music or a recording, cannot be changed, copyright information must be included in bibliography or references. Most materials can be used for educational, and research purposes. Reference all materials. Must be used for non-commercial purposes.

8 Checking for Plagiarism
Use of a detection tool. Warning Signs Unusual Phrasings Noticeable unevenness of style Too sophisticated for class level Unclear or incorrect sources in bibliography Different writing style from previous works.
