Cattle such as the one pictured here, which are affected by bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) experience progressive degeneration of the nervous system. Behavioral changes in temperament (eg, nervousness or aggression), abnormal posture, incoordination and difficulty in rising, decreased milk production, and/or loss of weight despite continued appetite are followed by death in cattle affected by BSE.
