2 Facts About Germs   v         There are four major types of germs: bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. They can invade plants, animals and people sometimes causing illness. v         They are very tiny organisms that may cause fevers, sniffles, rashes, coughing, vomiting and diarrhea after entering our bodies. v         Some of the illnesses caused by viruses are colds and flu.

5 Protection from Germs v  The best way to protect yourself from germs is to not spread them v  Here are some things you can do…

6 Proper Coughing/Sneezing Recommendations from the CDC v         Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.   v         If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into you elbow or sleeve, not your hands.   v         Wash your hands with soap and water.   v         If soap and water is not available, use an alcohol- based hand rub (wipes or gel).

Henry the Hand’s 4 Principles of Hand Awareness 1.  Wash your hands when they are dirty and before eating! 2.  Do not cough into your hands! 3.  Do not sneeze into your hands! 4.  Above all, do not put your fingers in your eyes, nose or mouth!

Proper Hand Cleaning     v Alcohol hand gel: 1. Apply a dime-sized amount of hand rub gel to the palm of one hand Rub hands together, covering all surfaces of hands and fingers until hand gel is absorbed (~ 20 seconds). v What it does: Gels act quickly to kill germs on the hands.

9 More Proper Hand Cleaning   Soap and Water Washing: v   Wet hands with warm running water. v    Apply soap to your hands keeping your fingers pointing down. v   Rub hands vigorously for 20 seconds. (Sing the Happy Birthday song two times.) v  Wash all surfaces: -   Back of hands -  Wrists -  Between fingers -   Tips of fingers -   Thumbs -   Under fingernails v       Dry really well with paper or clean cloth towel. v       Turn off faucet with towel and open door with towel.
