1. Molecular Beam Epitaxy Shutter System

2. Introduction
The following presentation illustrates the design of the Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) Shutter System. This document contains the information necessary to build the system. Such information includes the technical drawings for the custom made components, as well as the bank of parts for each component. The purpose of this project was to create a simple system that actuates at a fast rate and that is easy to assemble.

3. Setup of the MBA Shutter System

4. Shutters The MBE Shutter System uses 2 types of shutters.
Five of the six shutters are type B and only one is type A
These shutters are activated by the puling motion of six 25lb force pneumatic actuators
The shutters have a self-close mechanism caused by the energy stored in the torsional springs.

Anchoring Base
2mm diameter, 304 stainless steel shaft
1/16" thick Viton Fluoroelastomer Rubber
304 stainless steel retaining rings
Type 316 stainless steel, M2 and M3 machined screws and nuts
Type 302 Stainless Steel, 270° Deflection Angle/Degrees of Rotation with in – lbs of torque
***Note: Both Types of shutters share the same shutter seal

The MBE shutter system also requires the assistance of two pulleys in the actuation of two shutters.
This assembly has 4 main components:
