Part 3

Because we are an imperfect people and we live in an imperfect world we all experience failures in life.

WHAT CAUSES OUR PERSONAL FAILURE?
1. WE _______________ OUR STRENGTH (Matthew 26:31-35) OVERESTIMATE Part 1

Matthew 26:31- 35 “Jesus said ‘Tonight every one of you will desert me. For the Scripture says that when the shepherd is killed, the sheep will be scattered. But after I’ve been raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there.’

Matthew 26:31- 35 Then Peter boasted, ‘But Lord, even if everyone else fails you, I will never deny you!’ Jesus replied, ‘Peter, the truth is that before this night is over, and before the rooster crows at dawn, you will deny knowing me three times.’

Matthew 26:31- 35 Peter insisted, ‘But Lord, I would never do that! Even if I have to die with you I’ll never deny knowing you!’ And all the other disciples vowed the same thing.”

Beware of thinking this could never happen to me.

1 Corinthians 10:12 - GWT “…people who think they are standing firmly should be careful that they don’t fall.”

WHAT CAUSES OUR PERSONAL FAILURE?
2. WE _____ THE _____________ OF OTHERS (Matthew 26:58, 69-70) FEAR DISAPPROVAL Part 1

Matthew 26:58, 69-70 “Peter followed him (Jesus) at a distance and came to the high priest’s courtyard. He went in and sat with the guards and waited to see how it would all end. Meanwhile, Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard.

Matthew 26:58, 69-70 A servant girl came over and said to him, “You were one of those with Jesus the Galilean.” But Peter denied it in front of everyone. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

Proverb 29:25 – NLT “Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety.”

WHAT CAUSES OUR PERSONAL FAILURE?
3. WE _______ WITHOUT THINKING (Matthew 26:71-74) SPEAK Part 1

We put our mouth in motion before we put our mind in gear.

Matthew 26:71-74 “Later, out by the gate, another servant girl noticed him and said to those standing around, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” Again Peter denied it, this time with an oath. “I don’t even know the man,” he said.

Matthew 26:71-74 “A little later some of the other bystanders came over to Peter and said, “You must be one of them; we can tell by your Galilean accent.” Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know the man!” And immediately the rooster crowed.

James 3:5,6 - NLT “…the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body.

James 3:5,6 - NLT It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.”

WHAT DID PETER DO RIGHT? 1. HE ________ (Matthew 26:75) GRIEVED Part 1

To get past it you’ve got to go through it.

Matthew 26:75 “Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he went away, weeping bitterly.”

Psalm 51:17 - NLT “The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.”

WHAT DID PETER DO RIGHT? 2. HE FOUND SUPPORT FROM HIS ___________ COMMUNITY Part 1

Mark 16:10 – NIV “She [Mary Magdalene] went to the disciples, who were grieving and weeping, and told them what had happened.”

Matthew 18:20 – NIV “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

WHAT DID PETER DO RIGHT? 3. CAST ________ ON GOD’S MERCY HIMSELF Part 1

1 Peter 1:3 – GWT “…God has given us a new birth because of his great mercy. We have been born into a new life that has a confidence which is alive because Jesus Christ has come back to life.”

1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on him [God] because he cares for you.”

WHAT DOES JESUS DO WITH OUR FAILURES?
1. HE ISN’T _________ SHOCKED Part 1

Psalm 103:14 – GWT “God certainly knows what we are made of. He bears in mind that we are dust.”

WHAT DOES JESUS DO WITH OUR FAILURES?
2. HE _______ FOR US! PRAYS Part 1

Luke 22:32a “But I’ve already prayed for you that your faith will not fail.”

Hebrews 7:25 “Jesus is able to save us completely because he lives to intercede on our behalf. He is always talking to the Father, asking him to help us.”

WHAT DOES JESUS DO WITH OUR FAILURES?
3. HE _________ IN US! BELIEVES Part 1

Luke 22:32b “When you have repented and turned back to me again…”

Proverb 24:16 “For even though a righteous man falls seven times, he will rise again!”

Mark 16:6-7 “…but the angel said, “Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Look, this is where they laid his body.

Mark 16:6-7 Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you before he died.”

WHAT DOES JESUS DO WITH OUR FAILURES?
4. HE _______ US MERCY WHEN WE’RE DOWN (John 21:1-14) SHOWS Part 1

“Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee
“Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. Seven of the disciples were there and Simon Peter said, ‘I'm going fishing.’ ‘We'll come, too’ they all said.

So they went out in the boat, but even though the fished all night, they caught nothing. At dawn the disciples saw a man standing on the shore but they couldn't see it was Jesus. He called out, ‘Friends, have you caught any fish?’ ‘Not a thing!’ they replied.’

Then Jesus said, ‘Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you'll get plenty of fish!’ So they did what Jesus said to do, and they instantly caught so many fish, they couldn't even draw in the net because it was so full of fish!

Then John said to Peter, ‘IT’S THE LORD
Then John said to Peter, ‘IT’S THE LORD!’ “When Peter realized that he put on his tunic where he had stripped for work, jumped into the water, and swam ashore, leaving the others in the boat to pull the loaded net to the shore, for they were only out about three hundred feet.

When they got to shore they saw that Jesus was cooking fish and bread over a charcoal fire. Jesus said, ‘Bring some of the fish you just caught.’ So Peter went back aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was filled with a 153 large fish, and yet the net had not torn.

‘Now [Jesus says] come and have some breakfast
‘Now [Jesus says] come and have some breakfast!’ Now they were sure it really was the Lord! Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead.”

God’s mercy toward you is not dependent on your performance.

Lamentations 3:22-23 – NLT “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

2 Timothy 2:13 – NLT “If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.”

John 21:15-17 Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.” Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said. A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”.”

John 21:15-17 Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.”

Judas had a breakdown. Peter had a breakthrough.
