3 Why at Tor Vergata University ?
The natural site for SuperB is an existing accelerator laboratory Large sites such as SLAC have different programs at this time LNF site is too small to host SuperB Tor Vergata Close enough to make use of LNF facilities University with schools of economics, law, engineering, humanities, medicine and science and students Big Campus (1,480 acre ) with still a lot of available space:a 5000 m2 sport village is also under construction Favorable building codes A FEL project SPARX approved and funded Setup INFN/Tor Vergata engineering group to prepare feasibility study Started meeting in March 2007 Disclaimer: work still in the initial phase Nov 11-12, 2007 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities

Territory The Tor Vergata campus area is owned by the University The building code allows development with limited bureaucratic complexity (within reason): limit number and extension of buildings no shacks or barracks distance from Roman Villa archeological area possible archeological issue with access shafts Geology is good Terrain is geologically stable (pozzolanic ash and then tuff) Water is at about -50m, no interference with tunnels Need extensive geological samples to evaluate local stability Micro seismic data are not available at this time Limited elevation variations between 80 and 100 m amsl tunnel depth between 10 and 30m Nov 11-12, 2007 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities

Footprint Nov 11-12, 2007 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities

7 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities
Footprint SuperB Ring (about 1800m) SPARX SuperB Injector (about 400m) Roman Villa 100m SuperB Main Building Nov 11-12, 2007 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities

8 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities
Tunnels Tunnel boring machine available with 6.70m external diameter. Internal diameter a bit less than 5.80 m. Seems adequate Linac will need a double tunnel for the RF and klystrons Main ring will use a single tunnel with 4 or 6 surface service buildings PEP-II Nov 11-12, 2007 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities

9 Electrical power and distribution
Site power is only approximate at this stage. A rough estimate of absorbed power is the following This corresponds to an electrical plant sized between 50 and 75 MW Power supplier It is possible to buy power at 150kV from at least a couple of suppliers The University is planning an on site power generation system (especially for the hospital): it may be possible to exploit synergies. Nov 11-12, 2007 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities

10 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities
Power Plant Main high voltage transformer area 150kV/20kV 4 high voltage modules 120 x 80 m2 open area power delivery building about 400 m2 located in Sg3 area Substation buildings 20kV/220V transformers Rephasing RF transformers 3 along linac + 6 (or 4) around main ring about 15x11 m2 area. Nov 11-12, 2007 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities

11 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities
Cooling and water 35 MW of heat dissipation need serious cooling circulating water of about 8m3/s with ΔT=10° C Water cooling towers solution large water consumption: 32 l/s extrapolated from DAFNE and PEP-II, due to evaporation and rinsing of towers not enough water on site (max maybe 20 l/s). The entire Frascati town uses 50 l/s. power estimates: about MW Dry coolers exchange heat with air through radiators need at least 5° C temperature difference: air <27°C, inlet water 32° C, outlet water 40°C when outside temperature is higher than 27° needs an additional cooling system power estimates: 3MW for winter operation, 10MW for summer operation area estimates: 4 stations with 250m2 covered plus 1300m2 open area. Not yet on the map, should be located next to the electrical substations Nov 11-12, 2007 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities

12 Buildings and Facilities
The vicinity with LNF will allow the use of workshops and many facilities from there. Electrical distribution and cooling buildings will be partly underground (3-5m) to avoid excessive visual impact on the campus Main complex building will be over the experimental hall and connected through the installation shaft Area for central laboratory complex, local shop, detector support area, control room estimated around 6000 m2, to be refined. Experimental hall of about 20x60 m2 with a 8 m diameter access shaft Nov 11-12, 2007 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities

13 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities
Experimental Hall Nov 11-12, 2007 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities

14 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities
Cost Estimate The CDR cost estimate is based on rather generic numbers for excavation and buildings. More detailed cost evaluations will be needed once the infrastructure needs are more defined. Nov 11-12, 2007 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities

15 Conclusion and outlook
The site on the Tor Vergata University can potentially host the SuperB accelerator It is very close to LNF and can profit from its facilities An engineering group has been setup to prepare a feasibility study for the civil infrastructure and utilities Let’s start digging… Nov 11-12, 2007 SuperB Review - F.Forti - Site and Utilities
