1 ISUAL Product Assurance
H. Heetderks

2 ISUAL Configuration Control
ISUAL will use the Atmospheric Emissions Group On-Line Drawing System Developed for the IMAGE FUV Project Open Drawing Directory -- Anyone Working on the Project can Issue Themselves the next Drawing Number System used for all ISUAL Drawings and Documents Drawings may be in any of a prescribed list of formats (e.g. AutoCad R14) with the particular format identified in the Drawing Number Engineers Work in an On-Line Directory which is Read Only to the Group When an Engineer has a Drawing ready for Release he places it in a designated directory prior to CCB review Following CCB Review, Drawings are moved to a Read-Only Controlled Drawings Directory. Previous Revs are Preserved but the last Rev is Always Definitive Parts are Never made to Red-Lined Drawings or from an ECO Shop, Fabrication, and Purchasing Personnel Instructed to use only Drawings taken from the Controlled Drawing File An Image of the full Drawing Control System is maintained on our ftp Server at ftp://sprite.ssl.berkeley.edu/pub/img_dwgs Additionally, a pdf version of the latest rev of all controlled drawings is available at (go to research, isual) NCKU UCB Tohoku Product Assurance H. 3 ISUAL EEE Parts Program
EEE Parts De-rated per NASA PPL Guidelines Including High Voltage Components and Connectors Parts will be chosen from the following sources: Previous Flight use at SSL NASA PPL-22 US Mil or equivalent US Mil-883/B Extended Temp Range Commercial parts with SSL Lot Testing Radiation Tolerance of 20K rads will be Verified SSL Testing Manufacture Data NCKU UCB Tohoku Product Assurance H. Heetderks SDR 7 Jun 2000

4 Materials and Process Control
Material Certs obtained with Virtually all Materials Virtually all Materials and Fabrication Processes to be used have heritage on Previous NASA Programs at SSL All work is done from drawings and/or written procedures All Techs are NASA Trained in the appropriate specialty Soldering Harnessing Polymerics Parts made by outside vendors will be verified to meet print by extensive testing of fit and function NCKU UCB Tohoku Product Assurance H. Heetderks SDR 7 Jun 2000

5 ISUAL Quality Assurance
Document Control Identification and Traceability Parts with same P/N are identical Identical (and sometimes similar) parts will be serialized Procurement Controls Control of Limited Life Items Engineering Review of Purchase Orders Receiving Inspection Done by Cognizant Engineer Fabrication Control Documented in Fabrication Control Plan Fabricated Components controlled by Manufacturing Certification Log (Traveler) ESD Control per Space Physics Group ESD Plan ESD Certified Work Stations Grounded Operators and Tools Special Procedures for CCD’s NCKU UCB Tohoku Product Assurance H. Heetderks SDR 7 Jun 2000

6 ISUAL Quality Assurance (continued)
Non-Conformance Control Single Form for Failures and Discrepancies Discrepancy Reporting will begin with Procurement of Material for Flight Assemblies Failure Reporting will begin with Testing for Flight Components MRB Action required for all Non-Conformance resolution Inspections and Tests Inspection and Test Records will be included in Manufacturing Cert Logs Printed Wiring Boards will be Fabricated with Test Coupons Metrology Absolute Optical measurements will be made with NBS traceable Standards Electrical measurements will be made with instruments cross-checked against calibrated standards NCKU UCB Tohoku Product Assurance H. Heetderks SDR 7 Jun 2000

7 ISUAL Reliability Assurance
The Largest Contribution to Design Reliability is made by making maximum use of designs which have been proven on past programs Other Contributions to System Reliability Use of mechanical as well as electrical de-rating and design margin (e.g. leostar 4.2.3) Use of modular mechanical designs (I.e. components can be separated into easily repairable sub-assemblies) Greatly simplifies testing by allowing use of the ETU system as a test bed Greatly improves repairability Careful thermal control Reliability Analysis Parts stress analysis will be done by each Cog-E in lab notebook format as part of the design process Lab notebook level FEMCA’s may be done on selected sub-assemblies NCKU UCB Tohoku Product Assurance H. Heetderks SDR 7 Jun 2000

8 ISUAL Safety ISUAL Instrument Personnel Hazards
High Voltages are totally enclosed No pressure vessels, toxins, radioactive sources, high force mechanisms, high temperatures, stored energy devices, or heavy components SSL Test System Personnel Hazards Existing test equipment has hazard controls in place New optics test lab may have sources which require controls Protection of ISUAL Hardware Incorporation of safety protections into instrument design E.g. HV command enable, day light sensor, current limited power distribution Certification of test beds and equipment Careful review of test procedures (e.g. for buried removal of command interlocks) Test procedures verified on ETU system Use of proper transport procedures NCKU UCB Tohoku Product Assurance H.
