2 What is a public library?
A public service, paid for by taxes and open to everyone in the community. A place with books, movies, music, and other things. A place for finding things and doing work. A meeting place.

3 What can you do at a public library?
Borrow books, movies, CDs, and other things. Use a computer. Print, scan, or make copies of papers. Ask questions. Sit around. Hang out. Attend a program or event. See people.

4 Important reminders Return items on time.
Don’t damage or lose library items. Ask for more time. Ask library staff for help.

5 Did you know? You can use your library card at any public library in Rhode Island. You can request items from any public library in Rhode Island. You can return items to any public library in Rhode Island. You can return items even when the library is closed.

6 She is checking out books
She is checking out books. The people in line are waiting to check out library books. This is a scanner. It scans barcodes on library books.

7 This is a return box. People can drop library items into this box.
This child is using a computer. Most libraries have a section with books and computers just for children.

8 There are computers and special areas for adults too!
Look for materials to learn English and other languages at the library.
