2 To understand the form and meaning of parts of Mass.
Focus Question: How does my understanding of prayer and ritual shape me? Unit Title: Prayer and Ritual Learning Intention: To understand the form and meaning of parts of Mass. Success Criteria: To complete a higher level thinking task relating to the topic. Last Supper Last Lesson This Lesson Eucharist Magisterium Next Lesson

3 Catholic perspective on Receiving the Eucharist
Watch what this priest has to say about how to receive the Eucharist. How do Catholics receive the Eucharist? (Write down the do’s and don’ts.) What is the meaning of saying ‘Amen’ in response to ‘The Body of Christ’?

4 What does the Church teach?
"At the Last Supper, on the night he was betrayed, our Savior instituted the Eucharistic Sacrifice of his Body and Blood. He did this in order to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the centuries until he should come again, and so to entrust to his beloved spouse, the Church, a memorial of his death and resurrection: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a paschal banquet in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us" (Sacrosanctum Concilium 47).

5 Beliefs about the Eucharist
Watch this Catholic perspective on the Eucharist. What does transubstantiation mean? Is Mass just re-enacting the Last Supper? Why/why not? Can you use something other than bread and wine, e.g. if you are gluten intolerant? Can you receive communion if you committed a sin? Can everyone receive communion during mass? Why/ why not? In what way is the Eucharist the “source and summit” of Christian life?

6 After the order of Melchizedek…
Melchizedek, a priest and king of Salem (Jerusalem), offered a sacrifice of bread and wine. Psalm 110 predicts that Christ will be a priest “after the order of Melchizedek”. Your task is to… Look up Melchizedek’s background, And find out his relation to the Mass. (Note: You can use the link on our weebly as a starting point.)

7 We will look in detail at three parts of the Mass
Form of the Mass Introductory Rites Penitential Rite Liturgy of the Word Liturgy of the Eucharist Eucharistic Prayer Sign of the Peace We will look in detail at three parts of the Mass

8 What do you think the purpose of the Penitential Rite is?
Remember it is one of the first parts of the Mass. Penitential Rite Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Or in Latin Kyrie Eleison Kyrie Eleison Christe Eleison Christe Eleison The purpose of the Penitential Rite is to remember those things the person has done wrong and pray for forgiveness. This is at the start of Mass to put a person in the right frame of mind to celebrate Mass.

9 Is this helpful or not in understanding the Mass? Why?
Eucharistic Prayer The final Amen is sometimes called ‘The Great Amen’. Why do you think this is? Is this helpful or not in understanding the Mass? Why? The Eucharistic Prayer is modelled on a Jewish blessing prayer. The priest prays giving thanks to God. The congregation sings (or says) the Sanctus: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The priest says a longer thanksgiving prayer. The congregation make an acclamation of faith in “The Mystery of Faith”. When we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death O Lord Until you come again. The priest concludes with a doxology -  "For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever.” The congregation responds by singing (or saying) ‘Amen’.

10 The Sign of the Peace After the Lord’s Prayer the priest says: “The Peace of the Lord be with you always” to which the congregation reply “And with your spirit.” The Priest then says, “Let us offer each other the sign of peace.” This should be a dignified moment in the Mass. It is an acceptance of the other person to whom you reach out your hand and is a recognition of solidarity. The Sign of the Peace is a sign of reconciliation. The tradition goes back to early Christians. Why is this an important moment in Mass? How many different reasons can you think of?

11 Explain what ‘transubstantiation’ means in your own words.
Discuss why Mass is or isn’t just a re-enactment of the Last Supper. What facts would you select to explain the importance of Melchizedek? Examine how a different Religion of your choice celebrates Mass and write down the similarities and differences in comparison to our Catholic Mass. Create a poster illustrating the ‘dos and don’ts’ to receive the Eucharist. Write a paragraph convincing a third person about it that the Eucharist is the “source and summit” of Christian life. Choose your own tasks based on your confidence on the topic! Tip: Work at your own pace, this is not a race!
