1 Aim: How are natural resources cycled through our environment?

2 NATURE: NATURAL RESOURCES
Ever wonder where we're getting all the materials for our products and packaging? NATURE: NATURAL RESOURCES

3 Materials that are supplied by nature.
Natural Resources 1 Materials that are supplied by nature. Go to Section:

4 Renewable Resources Replaceable Items that will keep coming back as long as we treat them properly. Ex. when we cut down trees for paper, we can replant new trees & get more paper.

5 Non-Renewable Resources
Finite = limited Cannot be replenished by natural processes. Once we use them, they're gone FOREVER.

6 Group the following resources into two groups (renewable/nonrewable)

7 What will happen in the future if we use our renewable resources without replacing them?
If they are not replaced as fast as they are used we will run out of them.

8 Over Fishing Section 6-2 According to the graph below, how will the fish population be affected by human impact due to over fishing? World Fish Catch World Fish Catch per Person Total Catch (million tons) Go to Section:

9 What will happen in the future if we keep on using our non-renewable resources?
We will run out of them because there is a finite amount of them. Once they are gone, they’re gone.

10 Which product should you buy?
Why? (petrochemicals) Plastics are made from fossil fuels

11 How can we prevent the depletion of our natural resources?
Remember the 3 R’s: Reduce Reuse Recycle

12 Recycle Every time a new product is made, new resources are used. This is why we think companies should use as much recyclable content in their products as they can. This prevents new resources from having to be used.

13 Reduce Although paper is renewable and can be recycled, it doesn't mean we can waste it As important as recycling is, it still uses natural resources. The trucks that pick up and transport recycled products still use energy like fossil fuels to collect them, and fossil fuel is also needed to process (melt) the materials. We need to reduce our use of natural resources.

14 Re-use We need to start treating the environment like a library. Borrow items and bring them back no worse for the wear.

15 Summary Can you classify these?
