3 Splitting Paine Thomas Paine Published Common Sense Anonymously to help Gain support for Independence Thomas Paine: that kings ruled by the will of God challenged the Corrupt Monarchies that ruled the Colonies Argued the right to self defense and an end to tyranny Common Sense sold over 500,000 copies and pushed the independence Movement Forward

4 Deck The Halls The Second Continental Congress decided that it was time to declare independence and Created a Seal for the country (E Pluribus Unum) Thomas Jefferson would lead a committee to Draft the Declaration of Independence due to his writing talents and to gain the support of Virginia He Argued that: People have the Unalienable RIGHTS OF Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness He Said the King had Knowingly Violated those rights He said because king George broke the social contract we could break free

5 Bring on the Fireworks!! The Declaration would be Adopted on July 4th, 1776 and was signed by John Hancock and delivered to the king and other nations After the declaration a full scale war was declared 40-45% of the Americans were Patriots 20-30% were Loyalists loyal to Britain And roughly 25% were Neutral Most Loyalists, however, felt threatened and would flee to canada

6 Fight…For your right…to FREEDOM
The War Separated families, like Ben and William Franklin, who disagreed on the war Native Americans Were also Divided on who to fight for not knowing who would treat them the worst African Americans were also divided and forced to choose between the promises of freedom or equality

7 We are people too!! Woman, many of whom were patriots, would not enjoy the freedoms and liberties gained in the constitution Slavery would not be addressed in the Declaration of Independence, though we were declaring ourselves the home of the free Main Author Thomas Jeffers0n was actually a slave holder from Virginia Native Americans would also have their freedoms property and life taken away by settlers and were ignored in the declaration
