1 Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Eric M. Lui Office: Link 151 Phone:

2 Civil & Environmental Engineering
is a people-serving profession is a field of engineering that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of facilities that support our life-style and way of living

3 Branches of Civil & Environmental Engineering
Construction engrg. & management Environmental Geotechnical Hydraulics Materials Surveying Structural Transportation Water resources

4 Construction Engineering and Management
Deals with the construction phase of a project Construction engineers and managers apply knowledge of construction methods and equipment, along with principles of financing, planning and managing, to turn the designs of other engineers into useful facilities

5 Environmental Engineering
Deals with problems of providing safe drinking water, cleaning up contaminated sites, treating waste water, disposing solid and hazardous wastes, controlling air pollution and acid rain Environmental engineers apply knowledge of physical, chemical and biological processes to devise methodologies and design facilities to:

6 Environmental Engineering (continued)
destroy toxic substances remove pollutants from air, water & soil dispose of solid wastes contain hazardous substances develop efficient strategies for water supply

7 Geotechnical Engineering
Deals with problems associated with soil and rock Geotechnical engineers: design foundations, tunnels, dams, embankments, retaining walls and landfills perform soil tests evaluate stability of slopes and fills evaluate seepage of ground water evaluate potential settlement of buildings

8 Hydraulics Engineering
Deals with problems associated with water distribution Hydraulic engineers design pipelines, pumping stations, canals and open channels

9 Materials Engineering
Deals with the development and efficient application of materials for constructions Materials engineers: develop new materials for civil & environmental engineering applications develop innovative methods to recycle materials

10 Surveying Deals with the determination of relative spatial location of points on or near the earth surface Surveyors: measure horizontal and vertical distances between objects and angles between lines establish points and lines by predetermined angular and linear measurements working with cartographers to develop topographic maps

11 Structural Engineering
Deals with the analysis and design of structures Structural engineers: design buildings, bridges, offshore structures, space platforms to support their own weight and the static and dynamic loads they carry apply new techniques and methods to upgrade and rehabilitate existing structures

12 Transportation Engineering
Deals with the design of all types of transportation systems Transportation engineers: design highways, subways, railroads, airfields and ship docks perform traffic studies and recommend solutions to improve traffic flow and to mitigate congestion in mass transit system devise new transportation methods (for example, high speed trains) to reduce transit time

13 Water Resources Engineering
Deals with the physical control of water Water resources engineers: design drainage systems prevent floods supply water for cities, industries and farmlands protect beaches manage and redirect rivers

14 Challenges in Civil & Environmental Engineering
rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure controlling air, water and soil pollution providing clean water for consumption and irrigation finding solutions to the greenhouse effect disposing of solid and hazardous wastes
