Community will be receptive of healthy eating options offered at restaurant locations and show interest by ordering diabetes friendly foods within three weeks of initiation. Community members will schedule/attend routine PCP visits within the first year and follow guidelines for adequate healthcare.

8 Evidence Based Interventions
Community Exercise Program Healthy eating options brochure for local restaurants.

9 Community Exercise program Calendar

10 Healthier options Brochure

11 Theoretical Support for Community Focused Intervention
Community shows trend of high incidence of mortality related to diabetes Diabetes alone is above state average percentage Community shows above average obesity rates Community reports lack of healthcare intervention/ PCP Community reports lack of physical activity and leisure time Community reports show lack of education (HS and college) Community shows lack of healthy options for dining out (lots of pizza, fast food, high fat options)

12 Policy Implications If this initiative is carried out effectively, it stands to save Newaygo County some money. If obesity rates do not increase, our country “will save $550 billion dollars by 2030” (“About the United States Healthful…”, ushfc.org). Newaygo County could see relative savings. Newaygo residents will be healthier and happier. Newaygo County will become a “destination” for young professionals and retirees. Money that would have be spent on disease maintenance will instead be directed towards disease prevention research and education.
