Mandate of joint DT Group New Structure How the new group will work

3 News / Staff Movements M. Losasso + A. Foussat on 1 year leave to ITER as of April 30th. Re-enforcement being negotiated. Stephane R. takes over project work for T2K and TOTEM M. Ben Romdhane works for ALICE and AB Dep. (Mahdi remains administratively DT1-MM) Leaving DT1: R. Brocard left for retirement in January 08. Joining DT1: Charles-Henry Denarie transferred from AT to PH-DT1-TI since January 08 J-C Labbé transferred from ALICE to PH-DT1-TI

6 Motivation of Restructuring
Transition from LHC construction to Operation Start of New R&D activities New non-LHC Experiments may appear in the future Staff numbers decrease Overlapping activities and competences in DT1 and DT2

7 Mandate of DT Group The mandate of the PH/DT group comprises development, construction, operation and maintenance of particle detectors for the experiments at CERN. The group clusters common services and infrastructure which are at the benefice of all experiments at CERN, i.e. gas system support, thin film lab, silicon facility with bond lab, irradiation facilities, magnet support, B-field mapping, instrumentation and controls. The group’s activities are concentrated in four areas: Completion and consolidation of the ongoing LHC projects; Maintenance and operation: piquet services, shutdown and preventive maintenance, repairs and infrastructure support; New detector projects:, participation in new developments (LHC upgrade); R&D: participation in common R&D activities in strategic fields; Years 8/9/10 ~70-80% ~10-20% ~5-10%

8 How to structure the group ?
Linear Structure: ‘Autonomous’ sections for each activity Matrix Structure: Vertical Sections according to professional categories horizontal project structure Many sections with little interaction. Easy to manage, but inflexible. Few sections with much interaction. Challenging to manage, but very flexible. DT Model: All services and infrastructure activities in one section (mix of phys/eng/tech) All experiment related activities are distributed over 4 sections, arranged according to professional Categories.

9 Proposed Group Structure
Engineers Designers ~ 10 Physicists Engineers Technicians ~ 27 Physicists ~ 13 1-2 Eng/Phys Technicians ~ 18 1-2 Eng/Phys Technicians ~ 13 ~ 80 people (incl. some transferred from experiments)

10 “Modus Operandi” 5 sections (just for illustration) ~20 projects
Every project is performed by a ‘well defined’ team of people. Every project is led by an internal project leader. For every experiment we have an ‘Experiment Contact Person’.

11  We need to involve Department and LHC experiments in its management.
DT group will represent ~20% of PH total staff. It will be the main resource in PH for detectors and their infrastructure.  We need to involve Department and LHC experiments in its management. Meets ~2x per year. Review of activities and resource attribution. Long term planning. Meets ~1-2x per month. Follow-up of projects, short-term resource and priority changes. ECP = Experiments Contact Person

12 1st priority: complete/commission/consolidate LHC detectors
Projects in 2008 and beyond 1st priority: complete/commission/consolidate LHC detectors Several detectors / components will only be installed during 2008 / 2009 CMS ECAL end-cap, CMS Pre-shower, TOTEM T2, TOTEM RP, ATLAS ALFA Participate in operation / performance optimization of detectors, Piquet services (gas, magnet controls) Prepare and implement shutdown activities 2nd priority: Detector upgrade activities LHCb VELO replacement CMS TRK ATLAS TRK ALICE HMPID TOTEM T1 PH R&D Work packages (WP4,5,6,7) Engineering R&D (cooling technologies, composite materials ?) Non-core activities (X-HPD, PET)
