Process improvement is all about narrowing down to the vital few factors that influence the behavior of a system or a process. The only way to do this is to measure and observe your process characteristics and your critical-to-quality characteristics. Measurement is generally the most difficult and time-consuming phase in the DMAIC methodology. But if you do it well, and right the first time, you will save your self a lot of trouble later and maximize your chance of improvement.
