1 The Methods of Science Standard I-1: The Student will understand concepts dealing with the nature of science. Objective 1: Analyze the methods of science used to identify and solve problems.

2 7 Steps of the Scientific Method
Observation Ask a question Form a hypothesis (educated guess) Test your hypothesis Collect data Draw a conclusion Make a prediction

3 Hypothesis A hypothesis is an educated guess.
A hypothesis describes what you think will happen. A hypothesis normally begins with the words I think, feel, or believe. It can also be written as an if then statement.

4 3 Parts of an Experiment Control Variable Experimental Group

5 3 Parts of an Experiment Control- the part of the experiment that does not change or cause a change and can be used as a standard of comparison. Variable- the part of the experiment that can change or cause a change. Experimental Group- the part of the experiment that is being tested.

6 2 Types of Variables Independent- the variable that is chosen by the experimenter. This variable is located on the x-axis and will not change unless the experimenter decides to change it. Dependent Variable- depends on the independent variable and is found on the y-axis.

7 Common Laboratory Equipment
Graduated Cylinder-is used to measure small volumes in cubic centimeters. Triple Balance-is used to measure mass. Bunsen Burner- used in the laboratory to heat water and other materials and substances. Beaker- used to measure volume.

8 Common Laboratory Equipment
Flask- used to measure volume. Thermometer-used to measure temperature usually in degrees Celsius in the laboratory.

9 Measurements Meters are used to measure distance or length. Ex. Kilometer, centimeters, hectometers. Ex. a. The thickness of a dime would be measured in millimeters. b. The length of your finger would be measured in centimeters. c. The length of a lab table would be measured in meters. Liters are used to measure liquid volumes. Grams are used to measure mass.

10 3 Types of Graphs Bar Graphs are used to show quick and easy information. The circle/pie graph is used to show percentages. The line graph is used to show changes over a period of time.
