1 Topic: Acids and Bases (Part 2)
PSSA: A/S8.C.1.1

2 Objective: TLW compare the characteristics of acids and bases.
TLW compare acids and bases using pH and indicators. TLW describe the results of an acid/base reaction.

3 MI #1: Strengths of Acids and Bases
The concentration of an acids or base is a measure of the amount of acid or base dissolved in water. The strength of an acid or base is determined by whether all of the molecules ionize in solution (strong) or only some of the molecules ionize (weak).

4 MI #2: Neutralization Reactions
A neutralization reaction is a reaction between an acid and a base. Acid + Base = Water + Salt HCl + NaOH NaCl + H2O

5 MI #3: The pH Scale The pH of a solution is a measure of the concentration of hydronium (H3O+) ions in the solution. The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14; acids have a pH < 7, bases have a pH > 7 and neutral solutions (like pure water) have a pH of 7.

6 So What…? Real Life Application
Understanding acids and bases is important because many of the compounds that are part of our everyday life are acids and bases.
