1 Chapter 5 Analysis

2 Plot & Events Scout convinces Jem to back off on the Radley game. “My nagging got the better of Jem eventually ,as I knew it would, and to my relief we slowed down the game for a while.” P.46 Jem, Scout and Dill continue to play the Boo Radley game, where Jem “still maintained, however, that Atticus hadn’t said we couldn’t, therefore we could: and if Atticus ever said we couldn’t, Jem had thought of a way around it: he would simply change the names of the characters and then we couldn’t be accused of playing anything.” P.46 Through this, Lee implies that Jem is quite cheeky and finds his way around Atticus’ instructions so he can continue to have his fun.

3 Plot & Events Jem and Dill “spent days together in the tree house plotting and planning, calling me (scout) only when the needed a 3rd party.” “I spent most of the remaining twilights that summer sitting with Miss Maudie Atkinson on her front porch” P.46

4 Characters Miss Maudie Atkinson- “Jem and I always enjoyed the free run of Miss Maudie's yard if we kept out of her azaleas” P.46, hated her house, she is a widow, “a chameleon lady who worked in her flower beds in an old straw hat and men's overalls, but after her five o’clock bath she would appear on the porch and reign over the street in magisterial beauty” p.47, “she made the best cakes in the neighborhood” p.47, “she was our friend” p.49, doesn’t spread rumors, “Miss Maudie and I (Scout) would sit silently on her porch” P.48, “Her (Miss Maudie) speech was crisp for a Macomb county inhabitant” P.47 Boo Radley- His real name is Arthur Jack Finch- Atticus’ brother, rich, visits Maycomb every Christmas, likes Miss Maudie, strange. P.48 Mr Radley- “Mr Radley was a foot washing baptist” P.49

5 Setting Chapter 5 is mostly set at Miss Maudie’s house, Scout’s house and the Radley's house. Miss Maudie’s Yard- “sitting with Miss Maudie Atkinson on her front porch” This suggest that the story is set in Scouts street as they are on Miss Maudie’s porch, Miss Maudie’s yard has many azaleas in it. From the quote “Miss Maudie’s yard if we kept out of her azaleas” P.46, Radley House- “Dill remained at the light pole on the front porch corner of the lot, and Jem and I edged down the sidewalk parallel to the side of the house” P.53 Scout’s house- has a treehouse Summertime- “twilights were long and peaceful” P.48, “watching the sky go from yellow to pink as the sun went down, watching flights of martins sweep over the neighborhood” P.48

6 Themes Mischief- Scout, Atticus and Dill go to the Radley’s house trying to give Boo a message. P.53 and 54
