1 Introduction to New Product Development (Analysis)
Tech 190A Week 11 Lecture Introduction to New Product Development (Analysis)

2 Analysis: Analysis means determining/describing the nature of the design by separating it into its parts to determine the fit between the proposed design and the original design goals

3 Analysis Answers These Questions
Will the product break? Will it deform? Will it get too hot? Will it work? Will it fail?

4 Analysis Can be performed manually Can be performed on computer
Computer increases analysis capability Reduces its time

5 Manual Analysis Involves constructing a prototype and testing it
Very expensive Very time consuming

6 Computer-Based Analysis
Two categories of computer-based analysis are: Mass properties and Finite or FEA (finite element analysis)

7 Mass Properties Analysis
Physical attributes of a mechanical part that relate to how the component will behave in an environment. They include familiar attributes such as the Weight or mass of the object Volume of the object Surface area Center of mass Moments of inertia Bounding box

8 Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
Simulates physical behavior of a product design. The process consists of subdividing all systems into individual components or "elements" whose behavior is easily understood. And then reconstructing the original system from these components.

9 Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

10 Applications of Simulation

11 Applications of Simulation with SolidWorks SimulationXpress

12 SolidWorks Simulation

13 Multisim Simulation Example

14 Steps in SolidWorks Simulation
Open Solidworks SimulationXpress Click “Next” Select “Add a fixture” Select fixture location and click Click check mark Click next Click “Add a force” Select entity for force bearing and click Input force amount Click “Choose material” Select material and click “Apply”, then “Close” Click “Run simulation” Allow simulation to run for a while, then click “Stop simulation” Check result Repeat as needed until material fails
