2. Polling place Make sure you have a flow pattern in your polling place.
In the General Election you can expect lines when you open at 7 am.
Try not to have congestion at the entrance of the polling place.
Place a judge at 7am at the front door with the Master list to help direct voters.
If you have your precinct set up before 7am, take your master list and go through the lines outside to make sure everyone is in the right precinct.

Determine which ballot style to give to the voter

Place receipt on spindle
Provide the voter with a ballot
Direct voter to the demonstration judge
If voter makes a mistake in marking the ballot and requests a new one:
Have the voter place the spoiled ballot in the Spoiled Ballot Envelope
Issue a new ballot only after receiving the “spoiled” ballot
Ballot Judge is to inform Head Judge when ballot supply runs low. Call city or county when ballot supplies are down to 200 ballots.
Ballots will go fast in this election, but we did order more than normal.

6. Do you need more ballot packets opened?
All ballots must be initialed
A tally sheets must be complete for each ballot style in your precinct
Tally sheets are returned in the canvas bag

7. do NOT discuss a candidate’s position, information regarding a candidate, or question on the ballot with a voter or any other election judge while in a polling place!

11. Demonstration Judge
Demonstrate how to fill in the oval next to the candidate’s name or ballot question of their choice
Explain how to exchange the ballot if a mistake is made
Ask the voter to pause at the ballot counter to verify the ballot is accepted
Remember to not discuss any of the candidates on the ballot with a voter.
If they have any questions direct them to the sample ballots placed in the precinct.
Express to the voter the need to fill in the oval, not to circle the oval or the candidate. Do not place an X or a check mark in the oval or behind the candidates name.
Believe it or not when we do a hand count of the ballots there are ballots that have the candidate’s name circled and a check mark after the candidates name.

Never point to a candidate or question on the ballot

13. Spoiled & Defective ballot envelope
Follow the instructions on the envelope
Place the spoiled or defective ballot in this envelope when the ballot judge issues a replacement ballot to the voter due to;
Voter error in marking the ballot and they request a replacement, or;
The ballot is damaged while the voter is marking the ballot, or;
The ballot will not tabulate thru the AccuVote, due to an over-vote or under-vote and the voter wants to revote
Sign the attached label (seal)
Affix the signed label over the flap of the envelope to seal
Determining voter intent:
Ballots must not be rejected for technical errors if the voter’s intent can be determined
If a voter uniformly uses a mark that clearly indicates an intent, a vote shall be counted
A write-in vote may be counted if the intent is clear even though the oval is not completed
