1 8.4 Area of Parallelograms

2 The height of a parallelogram is the shortest distance between the bases, and is perpendicular to the bases. The height can be either inside or outside of the parallelogram. The bases are either pair of parallel sides of the parallelogram.

3 Area of a Parallelogram
Area = base x height A = bh h b

4 Area of a Parallelogram
Find the area of the parallelogram. A = bh = (9)(6) = 54 6 9

5 Area of a Parallelogram
Find the height of the parallelogram given that its area is 78 square feet. A = bh 78 = (12)h 6.5 = h h 12

6 Area of a Rhombus Area = ½ (product of diagonals) A = ½ d1d2 d2 d1

7 Area of a Rhombus d2=6 d1=8 ½d2=3 ½d1=4

8 Area of a Rhombus A = ½ bh A = ½(4)(3) A = 2(3) A = 6 4A = 4(6)
½d2=3 b=4 ½d1=4

9 Area of a Rhombus Area = ½ (product of diagonals) A = ½ d1d2

10 Area of a Rhombus Find the area of the Rhombus A = ½ d1d2
