1 Beating the Bounds! “Beat the Bounds!”
Remember the country code: Please leave gates and property as you find them. Consider others and stay on the marked footpath. Thank you! Protect plants and animals by taking litter home, and keep dogs under close control. Remember: poop & scoop! Psalm (song/poem) 104 is traditionally said while beating the bounds: “My soul, praise the Lord! You built the earth on its foundations, so it can never be moved. You covered it with water like a blanket. The water covered even the mountains. But you gave the command, and the water turned back. You shouted at the water, & it rushed away. You set the boundaries for the seas: the water will never again rise to cover the earth. You give us the wine that makes us happy, and the food that makes us strong. Lord, all living things depend on you. You give them food at the right time. When you turn away from them, they become frightened. When you take away their breath, they die, and their bodies return to the dust. But when you send out your life-giving breath, things come alive, & the world is like new again! A very large thank you to all who made this walk possible! Beating the Bounds! In ancient times, people walked the boundaries of their village (the parish bounds). Children beat the boundary markers with sticks. People of faith would pray, others would just walk. Both groups could be thankful, enjoy the scenery & forget their worries and cares. We can’t walk all the parish boundaries, but we can at least cover some footpaths near the main parts of the village. So we welcome you today for our picnic and walk (with “pauses for thought”), as we ... “Beat the Bounds!”
