Be able to complete a design challenge. Develop your 2D drafting skills.

3 Log in and Create Class Folder
Log onto the network Your log in number is on your student ID number Your password is your First Initial Last Initial Birthdate. Example Susie Kalahan 1/1/2002 sk112002 Jose Mahindra-Johnson 10/15/2001 jm Open YourName Folder In to top left of the desktop Open the folder with your Student ID number Make a new folder called EngineeringDesign Keep your EngineeringDesign Folder open

4 Creating Shortcuts 2) Double Click on the ‘IntroToEngineeringDesign’ Folder 1) Double Click on SMITH_GREG-Shortcut

5 Drag and Drop into your ‘Engineering Design’ Folder.

6 Shortcut to Class Website
Click on ‘Intro to Engineering Design’

7 Put Shortcut in your Folder
Drag and Drop

8 Syllabus At home print out the syllabus, have your parents sign it and turn it in.

9 Cable Car Design Challenge
Describe the challenge Break into teams Complete the challenge

10 Find the Challenge Use your shortcut to get to the class website and open 1.1 InstantChallengeCableCarLEGOModsSmith Save a copy into your EngineeringDesign Folder. You have five minutes to read through the description and then we will discuss it, break into groups and start the challenge.

11 The Challenge In this activity your team will quickly design the solution to a problem using a design process that progresses from brainstorming to presenting a final design. In a team of three or four, using only the materials provided, design and build a device or vehicle to move a small figure (Block) as far as possible across the room on the cable. A team member may initiate the motion of the vehicle or device but may not provide forward momentum.

12 Team Roles Leader Recorder Maintenance worker Time Keeper
All team members contribute to the final product in addition to the defined roles Leader In charge of keeping the team on task Recorder Record ideas Maintenance worker Coordinates Collecting Materials Coordinates Putting materials away Time Keeper Keeps the team on track for finishing on time

13 Materials Any 15 non-electric parts from your LEGO kit
Three rubber bands Four popsicle sticks 6” of masking tape Small Block to transport (You may decorate this block)

14 Part penalty for assembly.
Process Part penalty for assembly. Do not start yet. Brainstorm (5 minutes). Assign a recorder for your group. As a team, brainstorm as many ideas for your device/vehicle as possible as the recorder documents your ideas. You may handle and inspect the materials, but you may not alter or connect any of the materials in any way during this phase. Select one of your sketched ideas to pursue. Build (10 minutes). Build your device. Make changes to your original ideas as necessary. Test (1 minute). Each team will have one minute to test their device on the cable. Redesign (5 minutes). Make revisions to your device based on the results of your testing. Present. Each team will take a turn attempting to send their vehicle across the room on the cable. The distance traveled will be recorded. Reflect: Answer and turn in the questions on the Worksheet.(3+ complete sentences for each question)

15 Grading Creativity: Teamwork: Performance:
Up to 5 points for creativity in the design and use of materials Teamwork: Up to 5 points for how well your team works together Performance: 0.5 point for each foot that the device moves along the cable

16 Intro to Engineering Design
Demonstrate your project Clean up project Reflect and Evaluate your project Develop 2D sketching skills

17 Process Brainstorm (5 minutes).
When finished, each team member completes the summary. At least three sentence answer for each question. Turn it in as YourNameActivity1-1CableCar Brainstorm (5 minutes). Assign a recorder for your group. The person whose birthday is the earliest in the year. As a team, brainstorm as many ideas for your device/vehicle as possible as the recorder documents your ideas. 18 2D Sketching Be neat. Use a straight edge for clean lines. You can use light ‘construction lines and points’ to help locate where to place lines as needed. Grid is in ¼” squares Coordinates are given relative to the previous point. Start at the bottom left (Datum Point) X+1 right one X-1 left one Y+1 up one Y-1 down one Label each point (1, 2, 3, …) Connect Points

19 PROBLEM 2 Point 1 X + 1/2 Y + 1/4 2 X Y 0 3 X 0 Y + 1/4 4 X - 3/4 Y 0 5 X 0 Y + 1 6 X - 1/4 Y 0 7 X 0 Y /4
