10 Teachers After being interviewed by the school administration, the eager teaching prospect said: "Let me see if I've got this right. You want me to go into that room with all those kids, and fill their every waking moment with a love for learning. And I'm supposed to instill a sense of pride in their ethnicity, modify their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse and even censor their T-shirt messages and dress habits. You want me to wage a war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, check their backpacks for weapons of mass destruction, and raise their self esteem. You want me to teach them patriotism, good citizenship, sportsmanship, fair play, how to register to vote, how to balance a checkbook, and how to apply for a job.

11 I am to check their heads for lice, maintain a safe environment, recognize signs of anti-social behavior, and make sure all students pass EQAO tests, even those who don't come to school regularly or complete any of their assignments. Plus, I am to make sure that all of the students with exceptionalities get an equal education regardless of the extent of their mental or physical handicap. And I am to communicate regularly with the parents by letter, telephone, newsletter and report card. All of this I am to do with just a piece of chalk, a computer, a few books, a bulletin board, a big smile and joy in my heart!!!!!! I went to Nipissing U – Yes I can!!!!!!!

17 What Is Learning? Learning is attaching meaning to something that you didn’t understand before; … sometimes it’s correct (hurray)… and sometimes it’s wrong (ouch)…

18 How can I learn best & show people that I am smart?
Go to Complete the self test

19 Who is the smartest?

20 Theoretical Premise: Howard Gardner 1983, 2000
People engage in different kinds of thinking There is a connection between thinking and intelligence Howard Gardner challenges traditional views of intelligence which he says have centered on only 2 types of intelligence ( linguistic & logical mathematical) This theory is more appealing cross culturally because other forms of intelligence are valued in other cultures Real people have a blend of intelligences & teachers must consider instructional strategies that uses all the intelligences

21 Howard Gardner 1983, 2000 Most people are strong in at least one of the intelligence areas. Historically the traditional “intelligences” were privileged but Gardner proposes that all 8 of his intelligences are of equal value Teachers have embraced this theory because it is easy to apply to teaching and learning This theory also provides for alternative forms of assessment. Instead of answering the question “How smart are you?” assessment becomes “How are you smart?” All intelligences can be taught & nurtured

35 Published learning styles model in 1984.
David Kolb's learning styles model and experiential learning theory (ELT) Published learning styles model in 1984. acknowledges the early work on experiential learning by others in the 1900's, including Rogers, Jung, and Piaget. fundamental concepts towards our understanding and explaining human learning behaviour, and towards helping others to learn

36 Kolb's experiential learning theory (learning styles) model
Kolb's learning theory sets out four distinct learning styles (or preferences), which are based on a four-stage learning cycle. it offers both a way to understand individual people's different learning styles, and also an explanation of a cycle of experiential learning that applies to us all.

42 Teaching & Learning What is the connection ??????
Did you know that students retain: 10% of what they read 20% of what they hear 30% of what they see 50% of what they see and hear 70% of what they say 90% of what they say and do!!

43 Why use Learning Styles/MI in the classroom?:

44 Differentiated Instruction is a hot topic in education now
Differentiated Instruction is a hot topic in education now! Why: Because teachers are accountable for their students’ learning!

45 Differentiated Instruction means

46 Differentiating Instruction
is a teacher’s response to learners’ needs Teachers need to consider: Environment Content Process Product according to students’ Readiness Interests Learning Styles/MI The Expert Panel Report – Education for All discusses the importance of differentiating instruction and provides a description based on the work of Carol Ann Tomlinson. Key elements from the organizer used in Education for All will be referenced during this training. This graphic summarizes the big ideas that teachers must consider when planning to differentiate instruction: components for differentiating instruction – The Learning Environment, Content, Process, and Product student characteristics – Readiness, Interests and Learning Styles Note that readiness includes the knowledge base, experiences and motivation that a child brings to the learning experience.

47 Key Question???? What have you learned (or been reminded of) that makes you a better teacher for today’s society ?

48 One Final Thought for this Session!
If people are not learning the way we teach… Then maybe we should consider teaching the way they learn. Whatever you decide to do, do it with all your heart.

49 Exit Ticket! Before you leave please complete the ticket that highlights something that you have learned in today’s class. Be sure that your name is on the ticket – it is your “attendance check”
