1 Aim: How do we fit a regression line on a scatter plot?
HW#3: Last power point silde!

2 Do Now: Compute the value of the correlation coefficient for the data below for the number of hours a person exercises and the amount of milk a person consumes per week. Student Hours, x Amount, y (%) A B C D E F G H I

3 How do we fit the regression line on our scatter plot?
Need to correctly plot the regression line Can use slope to help you. The motive is to show the line drawn in the range of the independent and dependent variables. The sign of the correlation coefficient and the sign of the slop of the regression line will always be the same. Regression line will always be drawn through the point whose x coordinate is the mean of the x values and whose y coordinate is the mean of the y values. Regression line can be used to make predictions for the dependent variable.

4 Making a scatterplot, finding correlation, the regression line and plotting the line of best fit: NEAREST WHOLE NUMBERS The table below shows the heights (inches) and shoe sizes for a male gym class. Shoe Size Heights 11 68 7 60 13 76 10 66 8 70 62 64 9 7.5 12 78 72 9.5 12.5 74 14 80 13.5 15

5 Find the line of best fit and the correlation coefficient (nearest whole number):
The table below shows the heights (inches) and shoe sizes for a male gym class. Shoe Size Heights 11 68 7 60 13 76 10 66 8 70 62 64 9 7.5 12 78 72 9.5 12.5 74 14 80 13.5 15

6 Homework: on GRAPH PAPER construct a scatterplot, find and interpret the correlation, and find and the equation of the line of best fit. You may use a calculator for calculations. The data shown represent the number of books and the depth of paper (in inches) on ten college students’ desks at a random chosen time: Number of Books Inches of Paper 1 0.5 3 5 4 2.5 8 4.5 6 2 3.5 9
