11 Romanesque architecture & sculpture:
The BIG concepts to remember about northern Romanesque architecture & sculpture: Most Northern Romanesque churches were “pilgrimage churches,” centered in small towns….often containing relics of various saints. Romanesque churches are named so because of their reference to Roman architectural elements (like the arch, barrel vaulting, etc.) Architectural sculpture tends to be abstracted, showing little regard to space or perspective. Architectural sculpture tends to focus around Biblical stories, especially the Last Judgment (often seen on tympani in Romanesque portals.
