2 Complementary Approach
Homework: Due Next Class Need to pick one practice of CAM and find some information on that topic. Be ready to justify at the start of class where this practice is categorized. Complementary or Alternative Go over Homework. What did each of you find, What practice did you pick? Is it categorized under the subgroups in Complementary or is it one of the five Alternatives to medicine? Could it fall in each area? Class discussion on the topics.

3 CAM Review Complementary Health approaches can be looked at in two subgroups: • Natural Products • Mind and Body Practices We looked at this last week- good review Natural Products “This group includes a variety of products, such as herbs (known as botanicals), vitamins and minerals, and probiotics. They are widely marketed, readily available to consumers, and often sold as dietary supplements” (NCCAM, 2013). “Mind and body practices include a large and diverse group of procedures or techniques administered or taught by a trained practitioner or teacher” (NCCAM, 2013).

4 Complementary Approach
Natural Product Often sold as dietary supplements Herbs Vitamins Minerals Probiotics “These products were the most popular complementary health approaches among both adults and children” (NCCAM, 2013). “The most commonly used natural product among adults in the past 30 days was fish oil/omega 3s; popular products for children include echinacea and fish oil/omega 3s” (NCCAM, 2013).

Natural Products Mind and Body Practices Safety Concerns Drug Interactions Product Contamination Safety Concerns Research varies Non-trained practitioner or teacher Natural Products: Drug Interactions were addressed in the slide about medical herbs. Product Contamination: “Supplements have been found to contain hidden prescription drugs or other compounds, particularly in dietary supplements marketed for weight loss, sexual health including erectile dysfunction, and athletic performance or body-building” (NCCAM, 2013). Mind and Body Practices “Mind and body practices such as meditation and yoga, for example are generally considered to be safe in healthy people when practiced appropriately” (NCCAM, 2013). This is why it is important that when practicing these type of practices you need to find a trained practitioner or teacher to instruct you through the process. “The amount of research on mind and body approaches varies widely depending on the practice” (NCCAM, 2013).
