1 NOTES PHOTOSYNTHESIS, RESPIRATION, AND TRANSPIRATION

2 PHOTOSYNTHESIS Process plants use to make food (sugar/glucose)
Occurs in chloroplasts of plant cells Chlorophyll (green pigment) must be present Takes place during daytime (sunlight) Equation: sunlight Carbon dioxide + water  glucose + oxygen chlorophyll

3 RESPIRATION Process where energy is released inside plant cells for…
Building new cells Repairing cells Takes place in mitochondria of cell Occurs day and night Equation: Glucose + oxygen  carbon dioxide water + energy

4 TRANSPIRATION Process by which water is lost by plants
Water passes out through stomata (openings in leaf through which gases enter and leave) Plant loses about 99% of water that enters (only 1% used in photosynthesis) Results of transpiration Leaves are cooled Can increase humidity Creates upward motion of water from roots through stem to leaves out stomata
