1 Welcome to Childhood Studies and Family and Community Studies.

2 What is Childhood Studies?
What does it mean to study children in the 21st Century? What was the most significant point for you from the video?

3 Childhood Studies topics you will cover include:
Child Development Rights of the child The role of play Safeguarding The child in society Power relationships Language and Literacy in the Early Years Developing Knowledge in Young Children’s Learning International perspectives Leading Quality Placement at every level (200 hours with children 0-8 at level 5) Tackling Inequalities Developing professionals professional studies Content of the course is interdisciplinary – includes elements of psychology, sociology, education, health, social work, history, English, cultural studies and the kind of modules you will study include: list on slide. (interagency working – Common assessment framework) health - obesity, nutrition, specific special needs and disabilities, play –importance of play to children’s social and educational development, Work placements key part of the course – are currently part of L2 and 3 study, will soon be part of each years study. Experience is invaluable to getting employemnt in the area and we are committed to making the links between research, theory and practice. Recognised by CWDC as providing practitioner status up to equivalent of NVQ level 3. If want to go into teaching would need to a PGCE or for social work a PG qualification in social work. To mamange a children’s centre would need to have at least 2 years work experience plus the degree. Also do a Masters degree in Early childhood studies here which is very popular and all hons students do a research project in their 3rd year on a topic that is of interest to them.
