1 Multiplication Stories
The following stories were made by third grade students just like you!

2 Example 1 Ahhh, ants! Oh, sorry, I will tell you the story. I was having a picnic with Vida-Ruth. We shared 4 blankets. There were 6 ants on each blanket. How many ants were there in all?

3 4 groups of = 4 x 6 = 24 ants

4 Example 2 Tropical fish are so beautiful! That’s why I have 8 fish tanks in my room. 3 fish are in each tank. How many fish do I have in all?

5 8 groups of = 8 x 3 = 24 fish

6 Example 3 There are 5 airports. 5 planes are at each airport. How many planes are there in all?

7 5 groups of = 5 x 5 = 25 planes

8 Example 4 “Do we have to go to 8 beaches?” I said. I went to 8 beaches today. I picked 6 shells at each beach. How many shells did I pick in all?

9 8 groups of = 8 x 6 = 48 shells

10 Example 5 Swish, swash, swish!!! I was picking strawberries in my mothers garden. There were two vines with 5 strawberries on each vine. How many strawberries are there all together?

11 2 groups of 5 5+5= 2 x 5 = 10 strawberries

12 Example 7 I was walking in a spooky forest around midnight. The full moon rose up over the trees. In the shadows I saw 5 haunted houses. In each of the houses I saw 4 jack-o- lanterns. How many jack-o-lanterns did I see in all?

13 5 groups of = 5x4 = 20 jack-o-lanterns

14 Example 8 Sniff, sniff, mmmmmm. Mom and I just got done baking cookies for me and my friends. She put out 6 plates. There are 9 cookies on each plate. How many cookies in all?

15 6 groups of = 6x9=54 cookies

16 Example 9 There were 8 fish tanks. Each tank had 9 fish. Zip, zip, I watched the fish in the tanks swim. How many fish are there all together?

17 8 groups of = 8x9=72 fish

18 Example 10 There are 3 blankets. 4 shells are on each of the blankets. How many shells are there?

19 3 groups of = 3x4=12 shells

20 Example 11 The train was rushing for town but the train ran off a cliff. It had two coaches. On each coach there were 3 people. How many people fell off the cliff and lived to tell the story?

21 2 groups of 3 3+3= 2x3=6 people

22 Example 12 There were 5 cages. There were 4 dogs in each cage. How many dogs were there?

23 5 groups of = 5x4=20 dogs

24 Example 13 It was a lovely summer and I was walking down the path along my mom’s garden. I saw the 3 most lovely daisies and each had 4 petals. How many petals did I see in all?

25 3 groups of = 3x4= 12 petals

26 Example 14 Once there were 7 lily pads. Each lily pad had 7 frogs and toads on them. How many frogs and toads were on the lily pads in all?

27 7 groups of = 7x7 = 49 frogs

28 Example 15 There were 4 corrals. Each corral had 2 horses in it. How many horses in all?

29 4 groups of = 4x2 = 8 horses

30 Your Turn Write a multiplication story using a multiplication fact of your choice. Underline the clue words in your story and question. Draw a picture for your story showing equal groups. Include the following for your story. _____ groups of _____ Repeated addition number sentence

31 Word Problem Rubric My story shows the multiplication process.
I included clue word (s) for a multiplication word problem. I showed repeated addition and equal groups. I wrote a number sentence and solved the word problem. My illustration matches my word problem. My sentences are complete and make sense. Every sentence begins with a capitol letter. My sentences end with correct punctuation. I let my partner read and solve my word problem.
