11. The cell is discovered!
In 1663, Robert Hooke looked at a piece of cork through a microscope
He saw that the cork,(dead bark of oak trees), was made of tiny boxes
He called the tiny boxes “cells”

12. LIVING CELLS ARE SEEN
Anton van Leeuwenhoek was the first to see living cells through a microscope.
In 1674, he looked at drops of lake water, scrapings from teeth, and water from rain gutter under his microscope.
He saw one-celled organisms moving around!

In 1838, Matthias Schleiden used a microscope and realized that all plants are made of cells

In 1839, after using a microscope to study animals, Theodor Schwann concluded that all animals are made of cells, too.

15. Virchow’s hypothesis
In 1855, Rudolf Virchow hypothesized (predicted) that cells divide to form new cells.
