1 Introduction to the Major Scale
And the piano, too

2 The Piano Otherwise known as the most romantic instrument. Just ask Brahms or Chopin.

3 The piano is visually well laid out for scale studies because half steps are consecutive, while whole steps are separated by one key.

4 Major Scale Pattern: W-W-H-W-W-W-H

5 W-W-H-W-W-W-H is true for any major scale in any key

6 Important vocabulary: Enharmonics
Two enharmonic notes will have different spellings, but sound the same pitch when played. This note has been altered by a sharp to make it higher. This note has been altered by a flat to make it lower.

7 The Major Scale Pattern W-W-H-W-W-W-H
As written on the Grand Staff

8 Notes on the piano translate directly to the staff – including the half steps between white keys.

9 The major scale is built on two tetra chords.

10 Every major scale has the same pattern, be it C, D, Eb, etc.

11 Group Project Yes, this is probably the bane of your existence as a student in a public school.

12 With your group of 6, find a piano and stand next to it.
At the piano your team is at, work together to find and play all 12 major scales. You should have a major scale for each note between C and B. Then On the staff paper provided by Ms. Sewell notate all 12 major scales, going both up and down. You will need to use your W-W-H-W-W-W-H scale pattern and your piano to complete this. You might need a lot of staff paper, and that is ok. Expectations: Work together. Every teammate should be involved. Ask questions. If your team doesn’t know an answer or can’t come to an agreement, ask the teacher.
