Objective Rationale Today we will acquire and use academic vocabulary Increasing our use of vocabulary will increase our comprehension and writing skills. Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression. (7.L.6) Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly. (7.SL.6) Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences. (7.W.10)

7 Authority (noun) The right to give orders, make decisions or take action An expert source of information Authorities -a group of people who have the right to enforce the laws The authorities in Phoenix used tear gas to control the mob at the rally.

8 Devastate (verb) To ruin or destroy something completely
Devastating (adj) causing destruction Devastation (noun) great destruction The tornado threatened to devastate the town. The site of destroyed homes was devastating. The devastation caused by the tornado will cost millions of dollars.

9 Epidemic (noun/adj) The rapid spreading of a disease to many people at one time Adj spreading rapidly as a disease over a wide area The West African Ebola virus epidemic was the most wide spread outbreak of Ebola in history. Spreading across Africa, the virus reached epidemic proportions.

10 Estimate (noun/verb) A number that is not exact; a careful guess
To figure out roughly; to make an approximate calculation Is anyone willing to give Grandpa an estimate on what it will cost to repair his house?

11 Evict (verb) To force out properly by taking legal action
After months of not paying his fair share of rent, Carlos evicted his friend Tom and put all his furniture on the lawn.
