2 The Atlas On-Line Customizable Maps
Associated Web sites The Atlas On-Line Customizable Maps The “Atlas of Cancer Mortality in the United States, ” was released in December Two Web sites are associated with the Atlas. “The Atlas On-Line” is an interactive version of the Atlas, which enables the user to view and print everything in the atlas. The user can also download the maps and figures appearing in the Atlas, as well as the data used to generate the maps. “Customizable Maps” enables the user to create maps by controlling parameters such as number of ranges, ranging method, and colors. The user can also zoom, pan, and view an individual state, state economic area, or county. 4 Home Page There are currently three links from the Home Page. About the Atlas takes the user to a page containing links to the press release (8 December 1999), Q and A (answers to questions about the Atlas), and research contributions (from earlier atlases). Data & boundary files for maps Everything on this Web site can be accomplished through mouse clicks. The user can view all the text, maps, tables, figures, and graphs contained in the Atlas. The user can also download maps, figures, data, and geographic boundary files used to create the maps.

Data are available in dBase format (dbf) and ASCII text format (txt). These two formats are easily handled by either Windows-based or Macintosh computers. Variable definitions are available for on-screen viewing or downloading (txt format).
