4 TITLE OF YOUR ONE PAGER and YOUR NAME goes here
DIRECTIONS – Using VERBAL info (words) and VISUAL info (pic/symbols), ANSWER the following question – EXPLAIN the ENVIRONMENTAL issue of EUROPE – INCLUDE countries involved, Causes, effects, and how the issue is being address. THE ENTIRE SPACE must Be USED with INFORMATION RELATED TO THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION TITLE OF YOUR ONE PAGER and YOUR NAME goes here

5 Acid Rain in Germany What causes acid rain?
Acid rain occurs when factories’ smoke or vehicle/car exhaust fumes containing sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides go up into the atmosphere(air) and come back down to earth in the form of harmful rain, snow, sleet, or hail. Dry deposits also fall from the sky when there is no rain.

6 Illustration of how acid rain occurs

7 Effects of Acid Rain in Germany
ACID RAIN IN GERMANY IS AFFECTING OTHER PARTS OF GERMANY ESPECIALLY THE COUNTRIES THAT NEIGHBOR IT. Damage to soil and plants, trees (forests), crops - great economic impact to local economy and international trade Damage to fish/marine life, lakes, rivers and streams Contamination of drinking water Decay/Rotting to buildings and monuments/statures - money having to be spent to renovate Sulfur deposits from acid rain are carried through the air causing acid rain in other countries in Europe.

8 Damage due to Acid Rain

9 What can be done about ACID RAIN?
European countries are working on ways to reduce emissions of gasses from the smoke and fumes by finding and using alternative energy sources and Conserve energy and resource. All of these “fixes” cost money!!

10 Air Pollution in the United Kingdom
What are the primary causes of air pollution in the U.K.? Power stations and factories releasing smoke, fumes, and toxins in the air Vehicles/cars emissions – Cars other vehicles are releasing smoke and fume toxins into the air

11 How are acid rain and air pollution related?
Air pollution is carried from the U.K. to other countries by air currents resulting in acid rain in those countries as well. Air pollution rises into the air and returns as acid rain in the form of rain, snow, sleet, hail or a “dry fall”.

12 Examples of Air Pollution in the U.K.

13 How has AIR POLLUTION in the UK effected the economies and population of Europe TODAY?
Air pollution is effecting the UK and spreading all over Europe. Citizens have more Respiratory/lung disease= greater healthcare costs. Damage to vegetation/farming/soil – Crops, plants, trees(forests) can’t grow - have great economic impact to the local economy and international trade. Damage to buildings resulting in money having to be spent to renovate them. Closure of many factories resulting in loss wages. Air Pollution is causing acid rain in the U.K .and other European countries.

14 What can be done about air pollution?
Use of cleaner fuels, emission controls and advanced engine technologies. Money has to be spent on improving public transportation to reduce number of vehicles on road therefore reducing emissions.

15 Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster
Chernobyl is a city in Ukraine, and on April 26, 1986, the CHERNOBYL nuclear power plant outside of this town had one of the worst nuclear disasters in history. An explosion occurred when scientists were doing an experiment. The explosion released radioactive material into the atmosphere. The release of this material resulted in long term environmental consequences in Ukraine and other countries across Europe.

17 General Map of Chernobyl Fallout Throughout Europe

19 Photos of the Effects of the Chernobyl Disaster

20 How did the CHERNOBYL NUCLEAR DISASTER effected Europe THEN AND NOW?
Most deaths were attributed to nuclear fallout which was more than 400 times more than the amount of nuclear fallout caused by the bomb over Hiroshima. All citizens had to be evacuated out of the area. The residents where the reactor was located, were told that the evacuation would only be temporary. To this day there are still personal belongings in homes in the city. The Soviet Union tried to cover up the critical nature of the accident. Firefighters did not know that the fire they were fighting contained deadly amounts of radiation poison. Most of these men died within 3 months after the accident. By December, 1986, a huge concrete dome had been constructed to entomb the reactor.

21 How did the CHERNOBYL NUCLEAR DISASTER effected Europe THEN AND NOW?
People don’t really know how much damage was done because there is still evidence of the damage continuing today. Land Contamination – Agriculture (Farming) in the Ukraine as well as other parts of Europe especially Russia suffered - Land can not be used due to radioactive materials and nuclear fall out still in the soil – Nothing can grow in it. Payments and High medical expenses for the victims for continuous medical costs because the radioactive particles are still in the atmosphere. Loss of jobs due to closed reactors at the Power Plant
