1 Preparing students for trips
Supported Experiment Preparing students for trips

2 Having arranged a number of trips in the past to enhance students learning I realised that students often have unrealistic expectations of what the trips would involve, and therefore reduced their learning from the experience. We had comments such if I had know it would have been like that I wouldn’t have gone. Supported Experiment

3 HM Government estimates that, in the UK, school age children and young people undertake 7-10 million days of activity outside the classroom each year. In general, school visits are low risk activities – but this is because a lot of thought and planning has gone into assessing and managing any risks to the health and wellbeing of pupils and staff as well as recognising the many potential benefits. Statistics

4 As part of my supported experiment I therefore decided to prepare students before the trip so they had realistic expectations and would have an opportunity to have questions answered. Supported Experiment

5 How I prepared students
I prepared power points based on the previous years trips. I was able to show photos of the coach, the venue, photos of students from the previous years. I ran through the itinerary step by step. I answered any questions that the students may have. (Nursery world power point) How I prepared students

6 After the trips the students and staff then evaluated how this information helped them enjoy their experience and what they had learnt. So what was the outcome?

7 On their return and for data for my supported experiment I ask staff who attended the trip how it supported them and students. They felt that students seemed a lot more relaxed as they knew what to expect and had had questions previously. Staff Feedback.

8 Student Feedback – Data.
95% of students said that they found the preparation power point supportive. 95% of students said showing videos and photos of the trip helped them to visualise their day. 95% of students agreed that they knew what the arrival and departure times where and what to do if they where unable to attend on the day. 100% of students said they would like preparation in this way for future trips. Student Feedback – Data.

9 I feel the supported assessment was successful
I feel the supported assessment was successful. It met the aims of supporting students before attending trips. Conclusion.
