MAC Hiding in an H-VPLS Environment draft-cowburn-l2vpn-vpls-ldp-mac-hiding-01.txt Ian Cowburn Contributors: Richard Foote Prashanth Ishwar Vipin Jain Marc Lasserre Koosh Mohajeri John Rigby 67th IETF - San Diego, CA, USA

Problem Statement draft-ietf-l2vpn-vpls-ldp-09.txt defines a 2 level hierarchy for VPLS Spoke MTU-s to fully meshed PE-rs core PE-rs learns MAC addresses for customers on its directly attached MTU-s and the remote MAC addresses for all of its configured VPLS instances. Can result in requirement to store a large number of MACs 67th IETF - San Diego, CA, USA

Solution Assign identifier to MTU-s (MTU-id) Include source & destination identifier with frames using control word Switch at PE-rs based on destination MTU-ids PE-rs learns only MTU-ids, not customer MACs 67th IETF - San Diego, CA, USA

4 67th IETF - San Diego, CA, USA
Benefits Extends scalability of H-VPLS MAC scaling on PE-rs Minimized additional overhead per frame (4 bytes) Using standard techniques New use of Ethernet control word 67th IETF - San Diego, CA, USA

What is covered Signalling MAC hiding ability via LDP (RFC4447) Actions at MTU-s and PE-rs Handling broadcast, unknown, multicast MTU-id specific MAC withdraw Inter-provider use 67th IETF - San Diego, CA, USA
