15 Your brain is the most complex part of your body (according to the brain..!), it performs a large number of amazing calculations every second, taking in information from the outside world in the form of senses and allowing you to quickly respond to various situations.

16 Fun facts: The word ‘brain’ originated from the ancient Egyptians.
Early philosophers such as Socrates and Aristotle wrote and made theories regarding the human brain although Aristotle also believed that the heart played a crucial role in human intelligence. Your brain is 75% water. The brain feels no pain (it has no pain receptors at all) The human brain interprets the world around us in many different ways. These processes are researched in the study of neuroscience.

17 What does the brain do? The brain does all your learning and thinking. It also controls all your senses. The brain is connected to all parts of the body by nerves. Nerves are like electrical wires that carry signals to and from the brain to all parts of the body. The Brain and the body work together to form the nervous system.

18 What if the brain gets damaged?
If the brain gets damaged it is a serious because the brain controls everything we do. The brain has a limited ability to repair itself. It is very difficult to recover from a serious brain injury. Some things that affect the brain are germs that cause infection, and unusual cancerous growths called tumours* *pg 19 in the book.

19 Sight Activity: Another way that our brains make assumptions is through optical illusions. Our brain tries to fill in the gaps, especially as we have been taught to use specific shapes and angles to tell us about size. Your brain is always looking for blank spaces and filling them with information. Our brains are always trying to recognise things in our environment and create meaning out of them

20 Any volunteers. Hands up
Any volunteers? Hands up.. Try saying the colour in which each word is written.

21 These balls are exactly the same size.

22 Are the horizontal lines straight or crooked?

23

24 Watch how brain fills in the gap..

25 Which way is the train going
Which way is the train going? Can you change the direction with your mind?

26 Which way is the cat spinning?

27 Taste Activity: We’re not going to actually eat anything, unfortunately. Could you, however, list the colours your brain associates with the following tastes… Sweet Sour Salty Bitter Results on next slide….

28 This is the result from a sample of 51 random people.
Did you pick the most popular colour for each taste?

29 Memory Activity: On the next slide there is going to the a bunch of items. Try to remember as many as you can in 1 minute. You are not allowed to hold a pen or a pencil in your hand for this exercise. Only once the minute is up are you allowed to write the items you remember down.

31 Remember test next week (all of unit 1)
Classwork Do questions on pg 19. If and once finished. Go to end of unit questions and do those too (those can be finished for homework if not finished in class). Remember test next week (all of unit 1)
