2. Geography / Physical Characteristics
The kingdom of Ghana is located on the west coast of Africa.
(See picture below)
The climate there is warm and humid.
The area has rivers nearby such as the Niger River.

Ghana is made up of a dense tropical rainforest that goes into the savanna.
(A savanna is an area of grassland with scattered trees and bushes.)
This place has tropical vegetation.
There are a few mountains there too.
Ghana is located to the north of the Equator.

4. Ghana Economy The people of Ghana traded mostly for ivory and silk.
Farming
The people there farmed a variety of things.
Crops
Yams
Gourds
peanuts
papaya
Beans
Rice
Onions
sorghum
- millet

5. Ghana Economy The city of Ghana was built on trade.
The city traded lots of gold and salt.
The salt mines were in the central Sahara.
Salt was a very important factor to everyone, it helped preserve food and preserve food. (the salt had to mined)
They traded lots of gold since the mines near them were rich with them

6. Food/Family Life
Griot’s were story tellers that told stories that were mostly true
In Ghana children did not go to school
People were mostly farmers miners and artists
People in ancient Ghana were responsible for passing on stories
In Ghana they ate soups with fufu/plantain, cassava, kokonte, banku, boiled yam rice and bread
The soups are light palm nut soup or ground nut soup
They eat eggs, onions, dried shrimp, tomatoes and gari

7. Clothing/Shelter Houses were made from the Akan architecture
The Houses were made out of slat slabs and camel skin roofs
Homes were built close together
Most of the homes were one story buildings
Kente was made out of cotton
Women wore hardly any makeup
South Ghana people wore more of a smock, north people wore more of a gown
They wore very bright clothing with lots of patterns
People of Ghana didn’t wear shoes they wore sandals
