2 C o u n t r y D e v e l o p m e n t The first recorded gas attack during WWI was by the french. They used it to stop the German Army from advancing throughout Belgium in August 1914.

I n t e r e s t i n g F a c t s Poison Gas was most feared weapon of this war. If attacks were unsuccessful, victim would be left in agony for weeks or months before giving in to injuries

9 H o w I t’s I m p r o v e d ? it has become deadlier. nerve gas did not exist in WWI. most gases used were tear gas, chlorine, phosgene, and mustard gas. Poison gas is no longer used except by rogue states.

12 I m p a c t o n W a r US also developed new chemical weapons. Harry S. Truman, captain of U.S. field artillery unit, fired poison gas against the Germans in 1918. Total of over 100,000 tons of chemical weapons were used throughout WWI. Total of 30,000 troops were killed due to poison gas, 500,000 injured. (2,000 Americans)

Iran-Iraq War of Used to full advantage against forces that did not possess gas masks

14 I n t e r e s t i n g F a c t s 1990 → US and Soviet Union signed agreement to cut chemical weapon arsenals by 80% 1993 → International Treaty signed banning production and use of chemical weapons. Took effect in 1997.
