Week 5. Review related literature
According to Belcher, journal articles are typically published for three reasons: 1) to fill a gap in existing research, 2) to extend existing research or 3) to correct unsound research. If you assert that few other or no other researchers have addressed your topic, make sure you've reviewed enough literature to confidently make that statement. Additionally, when published, your article will continue the conversation about your topic. This makes understanding where your ideas and findings fit with the current literature an important part of publication NOTE: This summary is taken from Rich Reis’ posting in Tomorrow’s Professor Mailing List at <

Purpose of literature reviews
Place one's original work in the context of existing literature Identify areas of prior scholarship to prevent duplication of effort Point the way forward for further research Places each work within the context of its contribution to the understanding of the subject under review Identify new ways to interpret, and gaps in, previous research Describe the relationship of each work to the others under consideration Addresses conflicts amongst seemingly contradictory previous studies
5
Annotated bibliography
Summarizes critical points of current knowledge pertinent to your object of study: significant discussions, historical and current context theoretical and methodological approaches Cites scholarly articles, books, book chapters and relevant non-scholarly sources (e.g. reviews, interviews, exhibition catalogues) Your annotation will provide context / justification for selecting specific texts. Identify the discipline, place, time, perspective of writer (may require additional research), as well as their argument Summarize relevant aspects of the text, identify points of difference, state how it will be useful for your research
6
Criteria for research literature (L.Marks)
- original (for us this will usually not be a text but an artwork) - derivative (e.g. newspaper articles, Wikipedia. Replace with scholarly literature) - contextual (don't get lost in this) - methodological - theoretical (signals your camp) - related (shows you know what others have written on the topic)
7
Process Define your topic, the scope and research questions pertaining to your topic Search for materials: use search tools to find materials about your topic Read and evaluate what you have found in order to select material that makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the topic
