2 Objective The students will learn to use a factor tree to find the prime factorization of a composite number. TEKS (6.1D) The student will write prime factorizations using exponents.

3 Math Journal Write and answer the following questions in your math journal. Using only one word, how would you define a prime number? Using only one word, how would you describe a composite number? What is prime factorization?

4 What is Prime Factorization?
Prime factorization breaks down a number into its prime factors.

5 Prime & Composite A prime number is a number with exactly two unique factors. A Composite number is a number with more than two factors.

6 Prime Factorization of 12 = 2 x 2 x 3
Factor Tree Step 1: Start with a composite number Step 2: Factor the number Step 3: Continue factoring composite factors Prime Factorization of 12 = 2 x 2 x 3
