1 Foreign Language Proficiency
Will I be fluent by the time I graduate?

2 ACTFL Proficiency Levels (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages)
These guidelines are part of a system used to measure students’ functional competency or their ability to accomplish linguistic tasks. ACTFL has defined each stage of second language learning and given each an amount of seat time.

4 Purple line – proficiency after the typical 2 years of HS FL
Red line – Proficiency needed for the most basic survival in the country Blue line - minimal AP proficiency to pass the AP exam Gray line – K-16 language proficiency

6 NOVICE MID – Fr 1 Answers simple questions. Asks simple questions.
Uses common expressions about basic needs. Reproduces mostly memorized words and some phrases. Responds to questions about likes/dislikes. Responds with short phrases of agreement/disagreement. Makes and responds to simple requests.

7 NOVICE HIGH – Fr 2 Asks and responds with some complete sentences to questions on familiar topics. Initiates statements about basic needs. Expresses likes/dislikes; simple opinions. Makes & responds to more advanced requests. Makes an attempt to create with simple phrases. Can tell a memorized story.

8 INTERMEDIATE LOW – Fr 3 Explains and elaborates on basic needs.
Can make comparisons. Responds to questions with enough detail to gain info and express own opinions. Explains likes/dislikes; opinions and can make suggestions. Can give & follow directions. Uses present tense consistently/Uses a single tense at one time.

9 INTERMEDIATE MID – Fr 3.5 Starts to use present and past tenses while talking about familiar topics. Can handle predictable situations. Elaborates on likes/dislikes. Exchanges opinions and makes recommendations to others. Gives & follows directions, including clarification of unclear details.

10 INTERMEDIATE HIGH – Hon 4
Talks about home, school and community using the present, past and future tenses. Manages simple unforeseen situations. Explores the likes/dislikes of others. Expresses individual feelings and ideas in order to resolve problems. Gives & follows directions in unfamiliar situations.

11 ADVANCED LOW – AP 5 Talks about global and literary topics using cohesive and connected paragraphs in present, past and future tenses. Manages unforeseen and complicated situations. Expresses personal feelings in order to persuade others. Expresses individual feelings and ideas in order to resolve problems. Gives & follows directions for survival in unforeseen situations.
