1 CER 2014 Denise Shupe

2 Claim What is a Claim? A claim is a statement that answers the original focus question or problem. What you know and are trying to help others understand. How to write your claim: Use one complete sentence. Use descriptive words. Answer the question.

3 Our Problem /Our Question
We need something better to clean up spills What can we use (buy) that would better at cleaning up spills?

4 Claim evidence and reasoning

5 Claim evidence and reasoning
What does Vince want you to do? Why is Vince so convincing? We will watch the video again. Write down all the evidence that Vince uses to convince you to buy ShamWow!

6 Evidence Evidence is data used to support the claim. The evidence tells the audience the support you have collected that makes the claim convincing. How to write your evidence: Include observations that you have collected and/or analyzed from activities, readings, discussion, and research. Observations can be qualitative (word) and/or quantitative (numbers). Include accurate evidence. This means your evidence is correct. Include sufficient evidence. This means you have enough evidence. Include appropriate evidence. This means only evidence that supports and relates to the claim.

7 Claim evidence and reasoning
We will watch the video again. Write down all the evidence that Vince uses to convince you to buy ShamWow!

8 What evidence does Vince use to convince you to buy ShamWow!?
Holds 20x its weight in liquid Demonstrations - dried off the counter Washable Better for the environment $20 a month on paper towels Change the size Different/multiple uses How it is made 10 year warranty Made In Germany - Germans make good thing

9 Claim Evidence Reasoning.
Claim: You should buy a ShamWow!. Evidence: Does not drip. Holds 20 times its weight in liquid. Absorbs all liquid from a carpet. Construction of the ShamWow--microfibers

10 What more could Vince do to convince you that you should buy Sham Wow?
(hint: think like a science teacher) Let’s make Vince’s presentation even better and add the reasoning to his evidence.

11 Reasoning The process of explaining how and why evidence supports your claim using scientific principles. How to write your reasoning: Use a logical chain that shows how the scientific principle and evidence work together to support the claim. Statement A: Explain a scientific principle related to your claim. The scientific principle states… Statement B: Explain how and why pieces of evidence relate to the scientific principle. The evidence shows… Statement C: Restate your claim. Therefore...

12 Reasoning The ShamWow! towel works so well because it contains microfibers. Microfiber towels are made from two synthetic (man made) materials, usually nylon and polyester. The fibers are treated with chemicals and mechanically changed to make them very small, smaller than 1/100th the diameter of a human hair. This gives the towel a lot of surface area to make contact with the spill and absorb the liquid. The tiny fibers get into small places where most towel fibers cannot reach.

13 Claim Evidence and Reasoning

14 Claims-evidence-reasoning (CER)
Answer to the question! Usually the easiest for students Evidence Must be appropriate Must be sufficient Reasoning Explains how the evidence supports the claim Often includes scientific principles.

15 Biology Example Claim: Cell membranes are selectively permeable due to their structure Evidence: Some molecule enter and leave the cell via “gated” channel proteins embedded in the cell membrane. These transport proteins open and close in response to changes in the cellular environment. Reasoning (How does the evidence support the claims?) Gated channel proteins function as selective barriers, allowing cells to regulate the uptake of certain molecules while restricting the passage of others.

16 Biology Example What will happen to the shark population if the phytoplankton population die out? 1)The shark population will die out. 2)The shark eats other fish such as the ocean fish and the lantern fish. 3)The ocean fish and the lantern fish eat other organisms such as shrimp and copepods. 4)The shrimp and copepods eat the phytoplankton. 5)Phytoplankton are producers and they make their own food from the sun. 6)All of the other organisms in the food web depend on the phytoplankton, even if they do not directly eat them. 7)If the phytoplankton die, primary consumers (shrimp and copepods) will die because they will have no food which will cause the secondary consumers (ocean fish and lantern fish) to die, which will cause the shark to die.
